Probable cause against ex-congressman
A panel of the Ohio Elections Commission found probable cause Wednesday, by a 4-0 vote, that Bob McEwen improperly used the term congressman in front of his name in radio and television campaign ads as well as literature during the primary election last spring.
A complaint was filed against McEwen Dec. 29 by Thomas W. Blumer of Mason.
Philip Richter, executive director of the commission, said a hearing to review the evidence against McEwen and consider possible enforcement action will be held as soon as possible.
McEwen, a former congressman from Anderson Township, is considering another Republican Party primary challenge May 2 against newly-elected Rep. Jean Schmidt.
The complaint also alleges that McEwen's main residence is in Fairfax Station, Va.
McEwen could not be reached for comment this afternoon.
There are no automatic fines for making false statements in campaign ads.

It would not be hard for the Enquirer's crack team of political reporters to track down McEwen's bogus voter registrations both in Highland County and Hamilton County. I will even give them a hint. Check out the voting records at 7394 Ridgepoint, I think Apt 9. Both the Nixon family and the McEwen family voted in the 2004 general. Look when they registered there as residents and later moved to another condo in the same complex with a slightly different address, 7382 Ridgepoint. Does anyone think that the McEwen's lived with the Nixon's in that little condo from Oct. 2003 to May 2005? I don't think so.
I think Thomas Blummer should rethink this shameful smear attempt. It's no secret that he has had a baseless grudge against McEwen for years. Blummer has now resurrected this scant and speculative “evidence” in a flagrantly hollow attempt to smear a life long public servant. There appears to be no end to Blummer hate for Bob McEwen, a man who continues to offer so much to this district and its citizens.
Perhaps there is something more constructive Mr. Blummer can do with his time, say investigating alleged illegalities inside Jean Schmidt’s fundraising or her suspected acceptance of $10,000 of launder campaign money from former House Majority Leader Tom Delay. Furthermore, maybe Blummer can start asking how Barry Bennett can perform campaign related duties while in the DC Congressional office, which is clearly and unmistakably illegal. I can only hope that he wasn’t in the Cannon office when he relayed campaign polling to Malia Rulon, because that would be specifically and unquestionably illegal. Schmidt’s office facilities in DC and Kenwood should have no connection to her campaign, this includes her staff. I can only hope that Jean Schmidt and Barry Bennett realize the difference between campaign contributions and hard earned tax-payer money.
I am appalled at the baseless attacks against Tom Blumer, who is a great American blogger.
Mr. Blumer contributes an amazing plethora of minutiae to the internet political landscape. Without his work, we may never know, to the penny, what Bob McEwen spent on groceries at Kroger last week.
Without such information, we might never have known, for example, that Mr. McEwen has an affinity for Klondike Bars (original flavor), and that such an affinity demands further investigation to find out of McEwen ever received a campaign contribution from Klondike, Inc. Clearly, buying ice cream bars from a former contributor is ample evidence of a political kickback scheme.
And without Tom Blumer, just how could we possibly know, for example, that Mr. McEwen prefers pleated pants to the more hip and fashionable flat front? And that a noted fashion designer for Dockers once supported his campaign! Are you beginning to connect the dots now???
No, fellow citizens, without cyberstalkers like Tom Blumer, we, the uninformed electorate, would never know just what brand of mustard McEwen likes on his turkey club (Grey Poupon - certainly an indication that McEwen is a scoundrel).
Thank God for oddball kooks like Tom Blumer.

Mr. Blummer might have a legal; technical point, but, in proper ettiquette he is wrong. Titles of individuals, with their highest office ever held, remain with the individual for life. Tom Ridge in state politics will be forever known as Governor. In federal politics he will be referred to as Secretary as will Collin Powell.
For those of us who care about the corect use of the English language, Bob McEwen is entitled to Congressman.
