Coincidence or good timing?

A day after former Rep. Bob McEwen told the Enquirer that he'll challenge Rep. Jean Schmidt in the May 2 primary election, Schmidt’s campaign released a poll showing that she’s got a 20 percent lead over McEwen.

The poll, from Alexandria, Va.-based Tarrance Group (the same firm used by Schmidt’s predecessor) shows Schmidt leading McEwen 54 percent to 34 percent with 12 percent undecided.

(Of course, Tarrance Group was also the same polling firm that predicted Hamilton County Commissioner Pat DeWine would win the 11-person GOP primary! Schmidt won it with 28.37 percent to McEwen's 26.63 percent and DeWine's 12.45 percent.)

Some 400 registered Republican voters who say they will vote in the GOP primary were interviewed by telephone on Monday and Tuesday of this week for the poll, which has a margin of error of 4.5 percent.

The poll also showed that 95 percent of respondents know who Schmidt is, an unusual accomplishment for a freshman lawmaker that her campaign attributes to the national attention (good and bad) she got for telling Rep. John Murtha, D-Pa., a decorated former Marine, on the House floor that “cowards cut and run, Marines never do.”

According to the poll, 60 percent of respondents approve of the job she is doing and 83 percent backed her position during the Murtha ruckus.

Schmidt Chief of Staff Barry Bennett: “A huge majority of the electorate is standing with Jean and against the liberal anti-war movement. Jean is one of the most well positioned incumbents in Congress as she prepares for re-election”

Also in her release: She’s been endorsed by Speaker Hastert, the National Republican Congressional Committee, the Republican National Committee, the White House, the Ohio Republican Party and various county party committees throughout the 2nd Congressional District.

More Bennett: “These numbers make challenging Congresswoman Schmidt in the primary a fool’s errand.”

FYI, McEwen still hasn’t filed an updated “Statement of Candidacy” with the Federal Election Commission.

How can Berry Bennet say that Bob McEwen challenging Jean Schmidt is a fool’s errand? Where does Berry Bennet get his information? It is entirely obvious that Bennet is only concerned with protecting his own job, caring nothing about the future of our district. Schmidt has accomplished little in Congress. The main piece of legislation she has thrown her weight behind is bill involving political telephone calls. This bill is nothing more than a tired attempt to repress Schmidt’s own bad publicity. I feel confident that voters will not sit idly by while Jean Schmidt uses her congressional powers to cater only to her own election. I just hope that her staff will not be used in the election. The duty of that staff, including Berry Bennet, is to the families of this district, not Jean Schmidt’s reelection campaign!

More ethic problems for McEwen

The Ohio Elections Commission’s Executive Director and four commissioners attended the probable cause hearing today.

There were three cases under consideration: Blumer v. McEwen was third.

The probable cause hearing panel found that sufficient probable cause exists that Bob McEwen violated ORC 3517.21, and moved to recommend (i.e., hold) a hearing with the full commission.

This hearing will take place on February 9 at the latest, but it appears that there is motivation in the circumstances on the part of the commissioners to have it heard earlier, perhaps much earlier.

On top of this check out Bob & Liz McEwen's voting record in Hamilton County. Look at them declaring and voting from residency at 7394 Ridgepoint Apt. 9. Patricia Nixon owns the small condo, lives there with her daughter Nicole and both of them vote there also. Do we see a possibility of fraud. I think so. This is the same scam they pulled in Highland County until the Board of Elections caught up with them and threw them out. All public record.

I'd say that 99% of you that post on these things have no clue about elected politics. Barry knows what he is talking about, and gets paid a lit of money to have that information. If McEwen has any advisors worth their salt he should stick to his cushy new consulting job. Jeanie Schmidt will win her primary, comfortably win the general, and have a long and productive career in Congress.

When were the questions asked of respondents?

If you look at the poll questions this was a nice clean poll as opposed to many of the push polls designed to get the numbers a candidate wants. McEwen needs to pack up and go back to his real home in Virginia or become a four time loser in Ohio.
