It's official: McEwen to challenge Schmidt - UPDATED
Bob McEwen, the former Republican congressman who ran second to Jean Schmidt in last June’s 2nd District special primary election, said Wednesday he will take her on again in the May 2 GOP primary.
Surrounded by about 30 supporters at the Mercy HealthPlex in Anderson Township, McEwen emphasized his experience as a six-term congressman and said he is running because "this is not a moment in our history that rewards good intentions. More is needed from our representatives."
Read more from the Enquirer's Howard Wilkinson, who was at the announcement, in Wednesday's online edition of the Enquirer.
*NEW: Read Wilkinson's story in Thursday's Enquirer here.
Here's what Schmidt chief of staff Barry Bennett had to say about McEwen in the campaign release he sent out to reporters today:
"Bob McEwen announcing his candidacy at a hospital is fitting. His campaign is already in critical condition. He starts twenty points down in the polls. He runs against an incumbent endorsed by the state and national Republican Party organizations, the White House, and a whole host of conservative causes. This just isn’t an up hill campaign it’s up Mt Everest," Barry Bennett said.

Sounds like old Barry is a little scared.
McEwen needs to move back to Virginia. He is in ethics trouble before his campaign even started. Ethics doesn't seem to be his strong point but then again he is a lobbyist.
It is interesting to note the contrast between the entirely issue-based and gentlemanly comments of McEwen, who did not mention Schmidt at all, or even reference her in his speech.
In contrast, "Mean Jean" lashed out with a negative diatribe agaisnt a fellow Republican.
She is mean as a snake and dumb as a rock -- not exactly in the princely mode of the great Rob Portman, is it?
Come on anonymous, you make Bob sound like a typical democrat saying he has no ethics.
Bob's a good man and will serve us well in Congress, again.
No ethics sounds like he'll fit right in again in the Republican cloak room. Remember who started the Abramoff scandal. Not a single Democrat took money from Jack Abramoff. Steve Chabot, on the other hand...
I'm glad to see someone step up to take on Mean Jean. She has been an embarrassment in Congress, and as a State Legislator she was a rubber stamp for Bob Taft's failed agenda.
I don't think Mean Jean's supporters should talk about ethics, given her inability to report the gifts she took from lobbyists, the same crime that Bob Taft committed.

Schmidt's campaign is inept. The press conference wasn't in a hospital, it was in at Mercy HealthPlex, a Rec and Fitness Center.
All I ever read are nasty attacks by Schmidt - then she hides behind the troops. Too bad for her, one of them is McEwen's own son.
The contrast here couldn't be more obvious:
Dumb, Bridge-burning flamethrower VS. Articulate Stateman.
Both are similar on many issues, one is just better than the other.
And for those who hurl ethics charges at McEwen, do your homework. You're clueless.
Well hi guys. I'm from Sweden in Europe and this is what I can find and what I think about this Schmidt.
"Yesterday I stood at Arlington National Cemetery attending the funeral of a young marine in my district. He believed in what we were doing is the right thing and had the courage to lay his life on the line to do it. A few minutes ago I received a call from Colonel Danny Bubp, Ohio Representative from the 88th district in the House of Representatives. He asked me to send Congress a message: Stay the course. He also asked me to send Congressman Murtha a message, that cowards cut and run, Marines never do. Danny and the rest of America and the world want the assurance from this body – that we will see this through."
Schmidt was later forced to return to the House floor and have her remarks stricken from the record.
Seems to me that Cowards withdraw their statements, Heros stand by them…
Rep Tom Brinkman - “That’s typical Jean Schmidt...It was a total lie. She will say anything that sounds good. That’s just her. People refer to it back here as ‘Schmidt stories.’”
Mark Shields CNN-Politics - What made it all true was the venality and stupidity of the Republicans. From the personality-challenged White House press secretary accusing him of "surrender" to the clueless, but venomous, Rep. Jean Schmidt, R-Ohio, unaware of his combat record, accusing Murtha of being a " coward," Republicans made Jack Murtha the most prominent Democrat in town.
David Rogers, The Wall Street Journal -A senate Republican said "If the House Republicans want to make Jack Murtha the face of the Democratic Party, then Republicans will really be trounced next year."
Mark Shields, CNN-Politics again -Congressional Democrats, a large majority of whom need vertebrae transplants and are terrified of taking any position on Iraq, mostly kept their distance from Murtha until they realized that public reaction had swung his way. They then embraced him. The gentleman from Pennsylvania has changed the terms of the national debate, and Democrats should be so lucky as to have Jack Murtha as their party's 2006 face.
Schmidt in war of words
Rookie lawmaker's 'coward' remarks ricochet
By Malia Rulon
Enquirer Washington Bureau
NBC-TV
Actress Rachel Dratch of NBC-TV's "Saturday Night Live" portrays Rep. Jean Schmidt of Clermont County as a laughingstock lawmaker.
WASHINGTON - Three days after Rep. Jean Schmidt was booed off the House floor for saying that "cowards cut and run, Marines never do," the Ohioan she quoted disputed the comments.
Danny Bubp, a freshman state representative who is a colonel in the Marine Corps Reserve, told The Enquirer that he never mentioned Rep. John Murtha, D-Pa., by name when talking with Schmidt, and he would never call a fellow Marine a coward.
Jesus Christ, I'll send you my Swedish plant to race her and it'll win. Jesus what's wrong with you guys on the other side of the ocean. I don't know who to adress, Jean Schmidt or the guys who actually believe she belong in politics. Hey People THIS WOMAN IS GOING TO REPRESENT YOU IN THE SECOND DISTRICT. Whats wrong with you. Why did you choose this women instead of Hackett. It's Unbeliable. I just can't understand it, this... this... THING actually won.
I tell you what, nail polish wont fight any enemy. Now to something more fun I just bought your local troubadur Jake Speed's record The Cincinnati Legends of Jeremiah Schmidt and had it shipped over to Sweden. I tell you that he represent Ohio one thousend times better than that Schmidt. The record is surprisingly good. It's REALLY good. It's stuff like that that makes me want to travel to Ohio and USA. Not fear spreading and hating people like Schmidt.
Bob McEwen is what every public offical should be, A TAXPAYER> After serving six years in the Ohio House and twelve years in Congress, Bob McEwen spent over 13 years as a hard workingtax payer. Bob understands the needs of southern Ohio. He grew up here as the son of a respected small town Doctor.
He knew the expectations of the members of his home town, Hillsboro. He has always owned property in southern Ohio, titled his cars here and often visited family. Furthermore, his son Johnathon, is a young man who serves asa lance corporal inthe Marines. After 9/11 his path was clear. He had a sense of duty and honor. his [parents, Bob and liz, had raised him to know that one's nation deserves our service and sometimes for you to surrender your life to preserve and protect the American way of Life. I can think of no finer title than that of a parent of one serving in the armend forces of America. It is the finest reflection of a parenting job one could do.
Bob is a millionaire. His opponent has reported to the FEC net worth at least 4 times greater than Bob's. For me, Bob is the choice.
His opponent toutedthe Ohio Taxpayer Association endorsement last time. FECreports show payment to Scott Pullins LLC of over $28,000 last year by the Schmidt campaign. Pullins is the Ohio Tax Payer Association.
I am voting for Bob McEwen.
