Ad watch: Ghiz's 'Putting Cincinnati First'

AD: "Putting Cincinnati First," a 30-second television commercial for Leslie E. Ghiz for City Council. Started airing Monday.

SCRIPT: Ghiz: "Hi, I'm Leslie Ghiz. Growing up, my father used to say, 'Remember, your name is Ghiz.' It meant to maintain my integrity and be respectful of others; to stand for what I believe in, and lead by example; that my actions reflect on my name, Leslie Ghiz. City Council is a reflection of Cincinnati. As a council member, I will always put Cincinnati first -- fighting for safer neighborhoods, our children and our homeowners. I ask for your vote. On Nov. 8, remember, my name is Ghiz."

VISUALS: Ghiz speaks directly to the camera, alternating between a waist-up shot and extreme close-up. Her campaign web site address and slogan, "Putting Cincinnati First!" appear throughout.

FACT CHECK: Ghiz speaks only about her own background, values and priorities. Her name is, in fact, Leslie Ghiz.

STRATEGY: Ghiz's funny name -- it's pronounced with a hard "G" -- has been one of her biggest political liabilities since she first ran in 2003. Then, she began every stump speech with a pronunciation guide and -- depending on the audience -- a little humor. (She's convinced that the reason her yard signs disappear every time college kids go back to school is because students steal them for their dorm rooms.) So it's no coincidence that Ghiz says "Ghiz" four times in the ad. "The concept of the commercial is a true story," Ghiz said. "But yeah, it made it easy to work the name in. We said it four times." Beyond that, she sticks to safe and neutral issues. The ad is running on the evening news -- but there's also an emphasis on more female-oriented audiences likely to watch morning television news, "Oprah" and the "Dr. Phil" show.

Is that her 'o' face?

Whatever face it is,it's not attractive enough for extreme closeups-and when oh when will she lose the bad perm? Why doesn't she mention her grandfather, the DEM governor of W.Va? He must be turning over in his grave to have a Repug granddaughter (assuming he's dead).

Leslie Ghiz is hot - this is my favorite commercial of the season. Personal and effective. Great job, Leslie.

Thanks to everyone for being so kind about the ad; it is one of the best memories I have of my dad.
As for the guy at 5:39pm;
you have no idea what I have dealt with in my life, including the fact that I lost my parents at a very young age, and I didn't know my grandfather, as he died when my mother was 17. I have a feeling he is very proud of me and my beliefs.
Echoing Chis Bortz's comments a few days ago, it never ceases to amaze me the venom that people spew on these blogs. I'm terribly sorry that people with such hatred for others even exist. I am so proud that my parents taught me to be better than that.

I am sorry but the ad is pretty bad. Leslie is an attractive female, but the ad is just mind-numbing and made me want to turn the channel when I heard her voice. The message is interesting and you can tell it comes from the heart, but the ad doesn't cut the mustard. Perhaps this would have been better as a supplement to other hard hitting ads, not as a stand alone.

Ghiz likes to brag she's a b**lbuster so if she can't take some bashing on blogs she should not be running.

Ghiz is smart, and probably well intended, but the ad is blah blah blah. Her voice is the most nauseating of all the candidates and it just doesn't help her one bit. I really thought with all the money she's raised and her connections she'd do better. This ad was disappointing and will probably turn some voters away. I'm still undecided though.

OFC-some of us CAN spell-you're one of the ones who can't.

OFC-maybe "Alicia" was just keepin it real like you-hell, you're lucky you know what redolent means, based on the blather you post.

OFC - what are you referring to with the West Side reference? Leslie is not a West sider.

Way to be open minded OFC. Just because people live in a nice neighborhood doesn't mean they are snobs or out of touch.

Is Leslie really planning on switching parties if she gets elected? I heard she met recently with Tim Burke.

Yeah, I'm hearing that rumor more and more, which is great for the Dems. While I can't stand her whinney voice, anyone who is willing to defect from the Repubs is welcome on our side. She's more liberal and I think Democrat is a better fit for her since she's pro choice and pro homosexual rights.

You must have quite the exciting life OFC if you are up blogging at almost 1 AM. Many of the residents of Hyde Park descend from families who helped to build Cincinnati. Their tax dollars keep the city afloat (at least until council overspends and wastes them). Grow up OFC - hating rich people is so passe.

Sorry, Leslie. You seem like a nice person and your heart is in the right place. But, you're ad is "mind-numbing" as described by a previous blogger. The voice is just not strong for TV and seems so rehearsed. The words are heart-felt and that's great. But, you're consultants need to do better. Also, NEVER reply to a bad blog comment. You look so whimpy.

I applaud the candidates who address their critics. It takes a lot of guts.

Regarding Leslie changing parties, she's essentially already done so. She has alienated even her most ardent supporters within the Republican party with her strong support of every Democrat running. Her personal style of complaining and abusing people at the Republican Headquarters has turned off everyone from the Chairman on down. She doesn't really possess Republican values and used a Republican identity to raise lots of money from the Republican money machine. If elected, there is NO doubt that Ghiz will vote and act like another Democrat. Like her dorky Democrat friends Cranley and Pepper, she has no idea about raising a family, paying taxes, sending kids to school. Just another single political climber with no responsibility to anyone except herself. If she were a real Republican, that might be tolerable. She's a phony. Sorry, Leslie.
