Clinton seeks votes and coneys

UPDATED 11:40 a.m.

Hillary Clinton is leaving Skyline now

Clinton, who is leading Obama in recent polls in Ohio, declared herself to be "the candidate of, for and from the middle class of America - the middle class that is the guarantor of the American dream - the backbone of America."

Clinton spoke for a little over an hour; then slowly made her way through the crowd, shaking hands and having her picture taken by one supporter after another.

UPDATED, 11 a.m.

Democratic presidential contender Hillary Clinton, in front of a large and enthusiastic audience at an Oakley chili parlor said the difference between her and Barack Obama is that he "makes speeches'' while she "offers solutions."

"That's what we do that our opponent does not,'' said Clinton, who came to the Skyline Chili on Madison Road for a hurriedly-organized campaign event that was not on the schedule until late last night,

"I have a plan to deal with the foreclosure problem here in Ohio and cover every American with health care in an affordable way,'' Clinton told a crowd of about 200 jammed into every corner of the chili parlor. "Sen. Obama has neither."

Clinton entered the side door of the restaurant at 10:16 a.m. - about half an hour late - with Cincinnati Mayor Mark Mallory and Ohio Gov. Ted Strickland.

Mallory - a superdelegate to the Democratic National Convention who is uncommitted and being courted by both campaigns - introduced Clinton to the crowd and then left the building with his staff.

He is to meet with Michelle OBama later today, before her rally at Music Hall.

UPDATE, 10:20 a.m.

Hillary Clinton entered the side door of the Skyline Chili at 10:16 a.m., followed by Cincinnati Mayor Mark Mallory and Ohio Gov. Ted Strickland, to a tumult of applause and dozens of people trying to snap cell phone photos of the candidate in the packed restaurant.

Earlier:

Howard Wilkinson reports from a "jam packed" Skyline Chili in Oakley, where nearly 200 people have jammed in awaiting Hillary Clinton. A fire marshal just arrived to talk to the Secret Service folks.

While the crowd jammed into Skyline waited for Clinton's arrival - she was running late - Misleh's Sklyline staff was preparing 20 three-ways and about 60 cheese coneys - a to-go order for Clinton's staff and the traveling press

Howard's pre-Hillary early report:

Kam Misleh, owner of the Skyline Chili in Oakley where Hillary Clinton will hold an economic roundtable this morning, may miss a little early lunch business today, but he doesn't mind.

"It's pretty exciting,'' said Misleh, who owns six Skyline parlors in Cincinnati. "I'm happy to help."

The Clinton event wasn't on the official campaign schedule as of last night, but was pulled together quickly - probably in response to an announcement Thursday that Michelle Obama would attend a rally of supporters later Friday at Music Hall.

Misleh, who is also a member of the Madeira school board, said he got a call from Hamilton County commissioner David Pepper about 8 p.m. Thursday night asking him if the Clinton campaign could take over one of his Skyline stores for a while on Friday morning.

"I checked with corporate; they were fine with it, as long as it is clear that Skyline is neutral in this race,'' said Misleh.

Misleh said he told Pepper they could do it at any one of his stores. The Madison Road location in Oakley was chosen.

Clinton is expected to arrive about 9:15 a.m. for a quick roundtable discussion of economic issues with a group of supporters who were also contacted by the campaign last night. Then, she will head to northeast Ohio for campaign events there.

Jeanne Durbin of Madeira had been working as part of a Clinton phone bank operation all day Thursday, calling Democrats in Cleveland urging them to go out to a Clinton rally there later today. She was making the calls from her home last night at about 8 p.m. when the phone rang and Pepper was on the line.

"David asked me to come down this morning and be part of this,'' said Durbin, who was first in line early Friday morning. "I was thrilled to do it."

Tom Conlan Jr., a long-time Democratic party activist, brought his granddaughter, 11-year-old Morgan Bochenek of Mount Washington, a fifth-grader at Sands Montessori School.

"It's a civics field trip,'' said Conlan.

Morgan is a budding politician herself - she ran for class president last fall and lost a close election, but is gearing up for another race.

She is a Hillary fan.

"I think she is standing up for girls and I like that,'' Morgan said.

Skyline Chili normally opens at 10:30 a.m., and don't serve breakfast.

RESPONSE from Obama campaign:

"Instead of attacking Senator Obama, Senator Clinton should explain to people in Ohio why in 2001 she voted for a bankruptcy bill that would have made it harder for working families to climb out of debt. Senator Clinton now claims she's 'glad' it didn't pass, but people in Ohio would have been glad if she'd actually stood with them when she wasn't running for President."

- Obama campaign spokesman Bill Burton

Way to torture the Catholic volunteers and supporters of Hillary's campaign! That's a great idea, walking into a chili parlor on a Friday in Lent. Torture, sheer torture.
(BTW, this is not meant as a defense of the Church's teachings on meat-eating or anything else it does or says.)

Well, I always like Gold Star Better anyways.
Why in the morning? At Skyline? Yuck...

Funny how her meeting is for a select few, so they can sit around and talk about how cool they are. Michelle Obama's stop will welcome everyone in, it just goes to show they're attitudes on things.

I think a quick news blurb along the lines of "Hillary seen taking part in a three-way" would be hilarious. Let the explanation come out a few hours later.

Anon 10:40, that's right, I forgot, we can disrespect Catholics. It's the only group in America you can crap on with impunity. Imagine if Hillary served pork to Jewish supporters or offered food to a Muslim at midday during Ramadan. The outrage would cost at least one staffer their job.

And if a Republican did this, Danny Boy himself would be outraged.

How is it elitist? It's free to the public and in OTR. You make no sense. I encourage you to check it out and see how diverse the crowd will be.

BTW...skyline does have vegetarian dishes as well, so not everything they serve if for the meat-eating Cathylicks.

I think it is great. And even if you are Catholic you can still order something without meat! Vegetarians do it all the time!

As far as the location, its typical political fair. meet the people on their main street turf...seat eye to eye and answer questions.

Uhmm, how is a free event, open to everyone elitist?

I'd like to see you try to get into the Skyline, it's only open to her "special" friends, that's elitist.

On a side note, if you think going to listen to music at Music Hall is elitist, maybe that's on you. No one is stopping you from going, (it's easy oto get free/low cost tickets to most shows) if you have no interest in the events that happen there, that doesn't make it "elitist" I have no interest in country music, but I certainly wouldn't say a Country Music concert is "elitist".
Expand you mind, it doesn't hurt, I promise.

Hillary Clinton is an unfit morally bankrupt ethically challenged enabler who is beholden to the monied interests of her current home state. Her agenda is to obfuscate the truth and pay her cronies. Sorry Skyline caught up in the charade that passes for presidential politics, Clinton-style.

Obama 08. Be the Change

This is pathetic. The only thing Hillary Clinton knows how to do is tear people down. She has no relevant experience. In eight years OBSERVING in the White House, she was given one major policy initiative to spearhead, and it ended in complete and utter failure.

I'm so sick of hearing about how Hillary Clinton has learned from her mistakes. That's all well and good, but her "mistakes" in 1993 cost Democrats the Congress, and far more importantly, set us back 15 years on health care. That's right, Hillary-drones. Your candidate's health care plan isn't the result of anything new. It's Lincoln Chaffee's 1993 plan that Hillary was too stubborn to compromise on. Hillary's already done her damage. Hillary Clinton is the single biggest reason nearly 50 million Americans have no health care coverage. I hope she goes down in flames.

Why is she on the East side talking about the Middle class. Most of the middle and working class are West, north or in the outer burbs. I guess she feels comfortable with the wealthy democrats on the East who talk a good game but make sure all those section 8 vouchers get used in other parts of the City. Also Skyline started in Price Hill so why go to the East side? Follow the money. I now the line is republicans are all rich business people but why in Ham Co. are the middle class area's Repub and the east side Dem? By the Way Hillary is from a rich, well connected political Family ( Repulican ironically) -dad was a big lawyer. She knows nothing of the poor and middle class plite and as usual has a great plan to tell us all how things should be. Don't get me wrong most Pols from both parties are the same. When will people learn. Less government = less problems. examples, Social security, the Banks, freedom Center, bridge to nowhere, Public Schools (cost more per pupll than private yet the majority stink), Welfare, WIC and Food stamps(Create permanent lowerclass who rely on govn for everything and grow to have no initiative) and Hillary and Obama want more of your life run this way. Please explain why this is good?

This event was open to the public. I was contacted last night by her campaign, though I am an Obama supporter, and was told the location and time the senator was going to be there. I was told that anyone was welcome and to bring as many friends as I wanted. Maybe some of us on here can stop focusing on the petty aspects of this race and really think about who is best suited to run our country! If you don't take the time to really listen to what these candidates have to say, what makes you any better than those that are going to stay home on the 4th?

The religious nutjobs are out in force today.

Oh yes, we MUST pander to the West Side Catholics in this City, absolutely. And the moron who thinks that Catholics are some 'oppressed minority' needs mental help. The majority of us don't follow the meat on Friday/Lent deal. It's the 21st Century already. It's time to leave your fairy tales behind. Or order a Skyline Bean Burritto or beans & spaghetti. Deal with it.

The best though was 12:13 PM with their Left Behind comment. It's a work of fiction, there will be no actual Rature. You need urgent mental help 12:13. Please check yourself into a psych ward, STAT.

Hey ANON 1:19... First of all I'm not a Clinton supporter (in fact I'm a Republican) but the Chelsea event at Sully's on Tuesday evening was ope to anyone. How do I know? Because I was there, along with my daughter, who is in fact a Hillary supporter. We decided at the last minute to just drive down and check it out. We walked in and were welcomed with open arms. Hillary Clinton in my opinion is the only chance this country has of pulling out of the hole that this country is in. Bill left the office with our country’s deficit in the positive and employment plentiful! How many of you have ever used the Family Medical Leave Act? How many women have taken more than 6 weeks off for maternity leave? Yes, Bill was the president during that time, but it was her idea and her persistence that made that a reality. God Bless Hilary Clinton and I pray that she is our next President!

We are fortunate to be living through the most important election this country has ever seen. The Iowa Caucus really gave me hope that this country is finally starting to move in the right direction. A country with less Racial & Gender Bias.

I'm not anti-Hilary in anyway, in fact if she wins the nomination I'll support her as well. However while we have a chance to change or "Business as usual" politricks, and change our global perspective. I'm reaching out to everyone to GET OUT FOR THE OHIO PRIMARIES, AND VOTE FOR MR. OBAMA.

So here it is "IF HILARY WINS OHIO, I WILL OFFICIALLY DEFECT TO A MARYLANDER*" Yes, even WHEN Barack gets the nomination, because I'll have to again live with the guilt that my home state has let the country down again.

The American public has already got onboard ,as evident by the overwhelming results in the primaries. Do you know what a Minister is? It's a degree, at best, an on-line application at worst. Love the "Minister of the Lord" more like "Minister of a Lord" why do people assume that everyone is a Christian, and that they agree with their particular version of Christianity?

He's not Muslim, get over it. He went to a Muslim school for a little bit, big deal. Do you think everyone at Xavier and Moeller is a Christian? They're not. How about all the Christians that take Judaic studies classes at UC?

I'm not Jewish, I'm Catholic so that's why I don't maintain a Kosher kitchen, but I'm versed on Kosher requirements.
It seems you can't keep on the same theme and you're so defensive. Maybe you secretly feel guilty about your lack of respect for authority, tradition and ritual.
God bless your soul.

1:46 seems to speak for a lot of people, but who left her in charge of the religious police.
I'm Baptist and you're not authorized to represent me. In fact, I respect my Catholic friends for their dedication and values.
You come across as a small minded, bitter little person who needs an attitude adjustment---- STAT!

On the ballot this November:
1. McCain
2. Hillary or Obama
3. Anyone but Hillary
4. Neither 1 or 2

#4 would win with 50%. #3 would be a close second with 30%. #1 & #2 would tie with 10%

Footnote: Newsflash - "Anyone but Hillary" yard signs are now in vogue.

OBAMA....ANTICHRIST....MUSLIM I agree. His step father was also muslim. Say what you want, I HAVE done my research, obviously some people on here have not. Obama most certainly is very muslim. Just wait until that bone falls out of the closet. VOTE HILARY!!!!!

Antichrist, Antichrist, Antichrist. For goodness sakes, the man is an idealogist. He doesn't have a damn clue. Wait until his muslim leaders assume their role shortly after he has the power.

Anon 2:36 "The Catholics lost all credibility when they couldn't keep their hands off the little boys. Seems the misleaders were willing to eat a little dog any chance they got !"

This is stupid stupid logic. All of the offenders were white men. Does this mean all white men lost credibility because they are all pedophiles? It was a horrible and sick tragedy, but don't you even dare group all Catholics into that pile.

I'm not sure what any of this has to do with Hillary visiting Skyline. If you can't say something nice, don't say anything at all. Maybe you need a Bambi refresher course.

4:43 anonymous, thanks! I haven't written the other comments...but appreciated someone not attacking Catholics. There are lots of us not eating meat on Fridays. Personally, I don't care if Hillary does eat meat or hangs out in Skyline on a Friday in Lent. However, the attacks on Catholics in this entire blog is amazing. So thanks for speaking up!

Please Ohio, don't fall for the propoganda or Mr Obama! He has no more interesting in helping you than fly to the moon! Hillary Clinton has for decades fought for the rights and needs of everyday people. She is grounded in a REALITY of what it takes to achieve change, not a FANTASY. Don't fall for the preaching-driven mantra of Clinton's opponent in the same way that people in other states have. Open your mind and eyes and you will see that only one candidate truly cares about YOU. And that's Hillary Clinton.

Obama got Music Hall because fairy godmother Barbara Gould waved her magic wand and leaned on someone in the arts community. She can be a patron of the arts because it's all hubby Bill Motto (Meridian Diagnostics) money.Gould is a limousine liberal as so many Obama supporters are: "look at me, I'm white and oh so progressive because I'll vote for a (half) black man.

...and the post have been reduced to "He's Muslim" vs. "He's not Muslim" how sad, and how ilrelavent. The really funny part is this started out a Hillary thing, ended up an Obama thing. Guess that's shows us who people really want to talk about.

Does any of this remind you of when JFK ran for President? Everyone freaked out that the Pope would run America, kinda like what post 5:09 said.
Everything old is new again!

You don't see people spouting off that Hillary or Obama shouldn't be President because they're Christians. Because lets face it, if you look back at history, Christians have killed a lot more people than Muslims.
You have the Crusades (about 15 of those, 9 numbered, plus the Tatars, Hussite ect.), the KKK the killed a bunch of people and the listgoes on.

The Muslim thing is going to turn into the new "gay marriage" or "abortion" issue. Just a bunch of smoke and mirrors.

I will just assume the people bashing Muslims don't really know any, because all the Muslims I've met have been very nice understanding people. I can't say the same for some of the Christians I've met.

It's LINT to me, but as it's your ludicrous, supersticious practice call it what ever you want to. As for me, I'm having a rare steak every night until LINT is over!

What are you going to do now, send Bill Donohue and the catholic league after me?

To the person who said Obama is the anti-christ, read your Bible, the anti-christ is EUROPEAN BORN !!!!
You Clintonians need to open your eyes. In Texas it was hot peppers now in Ohio it's Chili dogs and in Pennsylvania it will be Philly's. This is the only way she can relate to the "little people". It is called PANDERING. She says she's of the middle class, well I can tell you middle class people don't have 5 million dollars laying around to drop into our latests endeavors. AMERICA, DON'T BE DUPED, SHE'S GOT MAJOR SKELETONS IN HER CLOSET. Why do you think she refuses to release her tax returns and when you can't afford her Universal Health Care and she's garnishing your wages will you want to sit down over chili dogs then?

I'm one pissed off Oakley Catholic. Not because of the Friday Lent thing, but because of the fact that the owners of the Oakley Skyline are Catholics..and they let pro-abortion Hillary speak there? You just lost a loyal customer!!!

Steaks for LINT, I hope you enjoy your steak. It doesn't bother me that you choose to eat steak on Fridays in Lent. It's a bit immature, but it humors me that you cannot spell that which you hate.
Obviously, your intent is to spend your time trying to upset people and for that, I pity you. Maybe you will gain wisdom some day and see how much energy you are spending on your hatred which in the end is only tearing yourself apart.
I will pray for you.

I went to Michelle Obama's speech--she refused to say one negative thing about Hillary.

She said Barack Obama will only wage a positive campaign.

What a reief to hear the POSITIVE

at 9:35 PM, February 15, 2008 Anonymous Anonymous said...

I second that about a "positive message." It really says something when dozens of comments on this story are about Barack Obama and his amazing campaign instead of being about Hillary and her "more of the same" attitude.

"... Anonymous said...I went to Michelle Obama's speech--she refused to say one negative thing about Hillary...."

Certainly, when one is trailing in the state by 21 points, as obama, what good would negative do ?

Especially when there is nothing substantive that anyone can say negatively about Clinton, PERIOD !

Why settle for a 'we can' when you can have the "WE DID" !

We'll take the proven leadership each and every day !

Sorry to drop the obama, on you !

HAD ENOUGH, VOTE CLINTON 2008 !

Obama ran negative fliers on Clinton and Edwards in Iowa- clearly marked as from his campaign, not a 527c

He doesn't have to bash Clinton because the media already does that for him

No one can criticize him without being "racist"

i work at skyline commissary and im not a Hillary. Eating at one of the stores help the local business. Yes she stops traffic and messes everything up but who cares. Its all good for cincy quit your bitchen

Hillary was so positive too. The media just grabs anything small and says she's negative.

She spent the entire time answering citizens' questions.

at 1:17 AM, February 16, 2008 Anonymous Anonymous said...

Hillary is faux middle class. She supports the real "limousine liberals" with Upper West Side and Left coast values, lofty incomes, and "patrician as social engineer" Democratic leanings. Senator Obama represents the working class, not the "entitlement" caste.

Anyone forget why Hillary really wanted to round table at one of the Misleh owned Skylines? They offer their employees medical insurance and supplemental insurance as well! This is rare for many restaurant business owners! Also their employees only pay a mere 12.50(approximately per week for full single coverage! The company pays the rest!

Hillary is a good candidate. Barack is a GREAT candidate. Policy ideas are very similar, but Barack can make the difference in crossing partisan boundaries to make changes happen. He can also inspire those who have felt disenfranchised in the past to work for positive societal changes. That is what he's been doing since law school.

We're fortunate to have two competent candidates this time around. I pray we'll vote into office the exceptional Obama!

I saw a bumper sticker that said "F* Hillary!" Then in small print it said "God knows she needs it!"
LOL...It's funny because it's so true!

Hillary is not faux middle class; she forked up 5 million bucks for her campaign.
Hillary is a shameless phoney who now wants the Florida and Michigan delegates to go to her support.
And how about her comment that she'll guarantee Bill will behave if she gets back in the White House. Throw the Billary ticket out; they're reprobates!

Coneys for phonies. The Clintons aren't progressives, they're Crony Capitalists. After getting elected, they quickly moved to the middle, cutting deals with Big
Business.
Flying all over the country and eating "local food" in downscale communities is patronizing, manipulative, condescending, and fundamentally dishonest: The Clintons' friends run hedge funds, not chili parlors.
Does this kind of crass old-school politicking still work? No - look at the polls. Don't be fooled, Ohio!

Maybe that narrow minded woman who eats steak everyday during Lint can enlighten us on Ramadan.
Our Muslim friends follow very strict religious rules during this tradition so I'm sure they would appreciate the views of a Clinton supporter.

Fairy Tail

That is not a good comment for any Clinton supporter.

2:09 I'm not Catholic, I'm Baptist.
You seem to be very selective about whom you criticize. Maybe the Catholics excommunicated you for being so disrespectful of their beliefs?

At any rate, when you poke fun at different religions, you show your ignorance. Some religions are tolerant and will ignore you as a moron, and others will retaliate.

Don't think you can hide from your Creator.

2:15 Why do you feel you can speak for others? You don't like Jews, nor Catholics, nor Baptists.
Is there any religion you tolerate or are you so misinformed and bigoted that you tolerate none.
I can't speak for my fellow Baptists, but we all can't be Republicans.
You must lead a miserable existence since your negativity is overwhelming.
Enjoy your steak if that's the only thing that you can tolerate.

Charles Barkley said it best live on CNN last Friday:

"BARKLEY: Hey, I live in Arizona. I have got great respect for Senator McCain. Great respect. But I don’t like the way the Republicans are taking this country. Every time I hear the word “conservative,” it makes me sick to my stomach, because they’re really just fake Christians, as I call them. That’s all they are. But I just — I’m going to vote Democratic no matter what. [..]

BLITZER: All right. One quick point before I let you go. You used the phrase “fake Christians” for conservatives. Explain what you’re talking about.

BARKLEY: Well, I think they — they want to be judge and jury. Like, I’m for gay marriage. It’s none of my business if gay people want to get married. I’m pro-choice. And I think these Christians — first of all, they’re supposed to be — they’re not supposed to judge other people. But they’re the most hypocritical judge of people we have in this country. And it bugs the hell out of me. They act like their Christians. And they’re not forgiving at all.
