Backers Taking Credit Today

Now that all 332 Cincinnati precincts have been found and counted, those who supported the winners are calling attention to their good fortune:

First, Pete Witte, of Price Hill Civic Club and POWR PAC, which saw seven of its nine endorsees elected: "I think this council can get things done, and no learning curves or excuses."

Then, from Scott Seidewitz, whose Seidewitz Group helped three of the top four vote-getters - Roxanne Qualls, Vice Mayor David Crowley and Cecil Thomas:

For Qualls, the agency used an extensive direct mail campaign, he says, that included pieces targeting African American voters and voters who had registered in Cincinnati since 1997, Qualls’ last year on the City Council ballot.

This is the fourth consecutive election in which The Seidewitz Group served as media and strategy consultant for Crowley, beginning with his upset victory as an unknown first-time Council candidate in 2001.

Thomas surprised many pundits by improving his finish from ninth in 2005 to fourth this year. The Seidewitz Group developed the campaign’s message strategy and a targeted direct mail campaign that helped Thomas significantly increase his vote total in African American precincts.
Seidewitz also helped unsuccessful people and causes: direct mail for Joan Kaup and for the Yes on Issue 27 campaign.

The Fiscal/Fascist/Phony Five are the ones who deserve the most credit for the strong finish of Thomas, Crowley, Tarbell (now Qualls)and Cranley.

While the "5" survived, they ended up at the bottom of the nine.

All their posturing, grandstanding, and attacks on the poor during the budget was what made real servants to the people shine.

Should Simon Leis take credit for helping defeat Issue 27?

Laketa Cole helped Cecil Thomas the most when she turned her back on the African American community to join the "fiscal five" last December. She voted with white Republicans to close health clinics and cut funding for social services. She made the only other African American Councilmember, Cecil Thomas, look good.

Then she punched a pregnant woman.

The most important thing Leslie Ghiz did to ensure her own re-election came when she fired Scott Gehring.

In other words: they targeted voters who don't know or remember the disastrous consequences of Qualls' last tenure.

Jane: nothing personal, but you have got to be the LAZIEST "reporter" ever. Flesh out this post by letting readers know that a) Seidewitz is a former Council candidate himself, b) Seidewitz did the media for Portune's successful Commission race; c) Seidewitz was Portune's choice to replace him but the Council Dems went with Cranley instead; d) Seidewitz now employs Chris Seelbach who managed Crowley's 2005 campaign and previously volunteered for Crowley; and e) Seidewitz work on Issue 27 was related to Portune's champeening it.

Nothing wrong with any of that, I just wish you'd earn your paycheck instead of posting press releases for a change.

Bortz and Berding did the best targeting in the black community for Thomas when they tried unsuccessfully to kill the Cincinnati Human Relations Commission.

The woman Laketa Cole punched was pregnant???

HOLY CRAP PEOPLE IT'S A BLOG!!! Get off Jane's back. Newsflash: The Enquirer political blog is not even the Enquirer's main source to divulge political news (nope, that would be the actual paper). So I don't blame any reporter if they don't spend all their time doing investigative journalism for the blog!

This is the same problem with people's reaction to Curnutte's Bengals blog- He's there to write stories for the Enquirer, that's his focus, not the blog.

It's called "back story." We don't get it in the "main source" either.

HAD ENOUGH, VOTE DEMOCRAT 2008 !

It's perfect! Seidowitz boasting, Mallory saying people must love the job council is doing.

What happened? Incumbents won, with only one serious challenger, Winburn, who was shown to be a clown.

So, don't break your arms patting yourself on the back. Only 27% of the people voted, so they can't be too impressed.

Coupla thoughts:

1. What now will the County do with the Kahn's/Sara Lee property?

2. Why the sudden need for cuts in public safety? I thought the Comprehensive Public Safety Plan was to fund new stuff not pay for what they do now? This was Portune's PBS, plain and simple.

3. To an extent Witte is correct. This Council, while being somewhat uninspiring, hasn't screwed things up as badly as Councils past. Lots of construction in the City (and not just condos).

It will be very interesting to see how long Crowley sticks it out before giving up his seat and to whom. Wendell Young? Why? Robert Richardson, Jr.? Why? Cooper? God forbid (even though Crowley's still working to keep Tillery happy).

Maybe now is the time to give it to Seidewitz since he was screwed by the Dems in 2000? Seelbach has been loyal to Crowley for years, and Garry is Crowley's spiritual heir-apparent. So many options, so little pull.

And since Cranley will no doubt a) campaign for Driehaus's seat or b) replace him should he be elected, who next for the Dems?

"Lots of construction"...all planned and paid for BEFORE this council was ever sworn in.

what about when Seidawitz elected Jane Anderson to council in 2003?

Qualls campaign a success?

I heard she was ten points ahead in September, and she lost to....CRANLEY!?!?

Come on...she fell like a rock and we all know it.

Remember last election only one incumbent lost....and that was SMITHERMAN!

Anon 9:15,

No, Slammin Sam Malone lost.

That was another Mike Harlow job.

Dude lost 8 more this week:

Harper
Malone
Winburn
Eby
Fischer
2 losers on school boards
1 loser in Colerain Township

I think this brings his lifetime record to 0-30. It's hard to say.

The gang at 700 Walnut, soon to be fleeing to Kenwood, really needs to stop thinking this unemployed, fat-ass, freeloading is a political whiz. The guy has NEVER WON A SINGLE RACE HE HAS BEEN ASSOCIATED WITH IN ANY WAY SHAPE MANNER OR FORM!

The GOP needs to unload this loser and maybe I'll start helping out again.

WHAT????

Qualls has been out of politics for what, 6 years?

She comes back...out of nowhere...and comes in 2...almost first....somehow that is not good enough? Give me a break!

...and Malone

No.

"what about when Seidawitz elected Jane Anderson to council in 2003?"

Jane lost in that election.

"Remember last election only one incumbent lost....and that was SMITHERMAN!"

No, Slummin'/Slappin'/Whippin' & Stealin' (allegedly) Sam Malone also lost in '05.

Yes. Councilwoman COle punched a pregnant woman. Was the woman pregnant with Cole's boyfriend's baby? Hard to tell reading the reports. Sure sounds like it.

at 12:55 PM, November 09, 2007 Anonymous Anonymous said...

All the polls had Qualls strongly ahead of Cranley since she re-emerged into politics. Her campaign seemed pretty weak, almost like she expected a coronation. Was that Seidewits' fault? Probably not. He is ridiculously arrogant, though. His press release only proves that.

at 10:46 PM, November 09, 2007 Anonymous Anonymous said...

A press release is about promoting yourself or your business. Plus, it ain't arrogance if it's true.

Pavelish campaigned to be a councilmember accessible to the people at city hall all the time and Qualls ran an ad to be available every Monday late afternoons (4:30 to 5:30 . Wow, what a deal, one hour per week for the people. See what happens when you vote only on name recognition. Are we prepared for the same nothing for two more years. How foolish (lazy)have we voters become.

Whatever on the stupid debate about Cranley and Qualls. They tied. Cincinnati is fortunate to have them both on Council working together.

I do agree with the other comments that say The Fiscal Frauds did more to help Thomas than anything else.

It's now official: Michael Harlow has become the Bob Shrum of local Republican politics! What a shame his hot wife Heather has this loser dragging her down like an anchor!

at 11:22 AM, November 12, 2007 Anonymous Anonymous said...

Heather Harlow defeated a 12?..16? year incumbent in 2003 to get elected. This year she was handily re-elected. Yeah her hubby must be really dragging her down....

It should be obvious to all that the person spreading lies about Mr. Harlow is the same moron who thought Harlow was manpulating The Blue Chip Young Republicans to turn against him as their president in August and September. Others may wish to reveal his name, but I refuse to give the guy any more name recognition.

Anon 10:00 AM must have forgotten the sarcasm tag.

Cincy Jeff, in 2003, Heather Harlow defeated a 16-year incumbent. Her husband did manage that campaign. She was unopposed last week.

The Harlows live in Colerain Township. Their state represenative is a Republican. Their state senator is a Republican. Their Congressman is a Republican. The Township Trustees were all Republican for the past 6 years, and now 2 of 3 are. It is completely ridiculous and delusional for anyone to assert that her husband has never worked on a winning campaign.

Whoever is saying this is totally clueless about local politics, especially on the Republican side. The Republican Party didn't find Heather Harlow because they flipped open to her name in the phone book (odds are, it's her husband's name in there anyway). They asked her to run because of she and her husband's support for, and commitment to, the party's other candidates. Many of them had to have been successful in order for them to have been in a position to promote Heather to the powers that be within the county party. Losing candidates don't often get their phone calls returned by party officials.

Heather had to have gotten the nod because she had support from Chabot, Clancy, and others. All of whom, you may care to note, have been successfully elected. Do you really think the gang of losers on the other side of town the anon-clueless asserts are on his resume could engineer that?

Are you that stupid? Or are you too bitter about your own political defeats to be able to think clearly anymore?

And, you know, I can only think of one person in this town who would be this stupid or bitter, based on his history of getting fired, managing a losing campaign, and being booted out as president of a Republican club all within the past 90 days.
