Talking taxes

Hamilton County commissioners Todd Portune and David Pepper will be making the rounds in the next few months to each of Hamilton County's 49 political jurisdictions.

The topic of discussion: sales tax.

Portune wants to ask voters in August for a sales tax increase to build a new jail and fund associated programs. The filing deadline for an Aug. 28 special election is June 14.

So over the next few months, Pepper and Portune plan to split up and attend city council, township trustee, or village council meetings in every community in the county to present the soon-to-be-finalized jail plan.
"We're going to examine: Why this plan? Why is it funded this way? What do we hope to accomplish? and what do we want our county to do?" Portune said. At least two public hearings will also be held at the county level.
Portune expects the county will decide April 14 whether to pursue the special election -- which would require a change to state law. The third commissioner, Pat DeWine, is opposed to a special election.

Jessica - Glad to see you got the part about it being a sales tax right. But this post still doesn't make much sense. You start one sentence with a lowercase "to" and the blog ends in the middle of a thought.

I knew the Enquirer's standards were sinking but wow...

So help me understand; we're going to spend a million dollars to have a special election in August? Are they hoping that certain people of color won't show up?

If you criticize people for petty, immaterial issues - how do you expect them to stay interested in your relevant comments as time goes on.

Give her a break

I know, i forgot the questionmark, the period and didn't capitalize "i" - so what -- this is a blog

I would love to see this rolled out with a good report about the inefficiencies at the court house and current jail, a review of jail expenditures (Leis has some sneaky stuff going on), and a commitment from both parties to resolve the issues identified - particularly the detainment of low level offenders too poor to post a fifty dollar bond, the wasted time in court rooms, the heightened expenses of the court reporters (this county expenditure really needs to be outed)and a full service re-entry program

The cost of waiting for months longer to do anything is far more than a million dollars. Butler County alone costs a million every couple months. And inflation/interest totals up to a million very fast as well. And the cost of the status quo is the most expensive of all--hundreds of millions spent on an outdated, ineffective system.

If it passes, it'll save more having done it in August than November. The sooner we start, the more we save.

She is supposedly a journalist. Writing coherently is her job.

What you are advocating is akin to not holding doctors acountable when they commit malpractice.

Jessica, welcome to a complex issue. A blog is a wonderful invention. It lets the folks who are truly informed know how the rhetoric and detractors will obscure reality. It is easy to attack an issue from a position of sincere conviction based on ignorance. Most bloggers, and many politicians (DeWine included), do not take the time to really understand before demanding to be heard.

Does DeWine "get" the jail issue? Does anybody want to check his contributions and attendance at the criminal justice commission meetings? Does anybody want to ask DeWine who he consults on this important issue? Where was DeWine’s solution before Heimlich went out on a limb on the jail issue? Has DeWine produced anything in writing for public scrutiny concerning the jail issue? He is myopically impaired with his focus on taxes. I would like to think an elected official has far more to offer the public.

P&G became a great company because of its clear vision and courage to invest. If DeWine was running P&G we would have Pampers being made in outdated manufacturing facilities in multiple locations less than a mile apart; and if P&G ran the county jail system they would have never considered putting inmates in 100-year old warehouses and converted car dealerships and transporting inmates to another county for "storage."
