Chabot hits the streets

Facing his most difficult re-election challenge in years, Republican Rep. Steve Chabot did something not many six-term congressmen do: He grabbed a sign and, with the wooden sign post sticking out of his passenger side window, he set off in his faded blue 1993 Buick for the intersection of Galbraith Rd. and Colerain Ave.

“You can meet a lot of folks in a short amount of time out here,” the congressman explained, as he stood in the cold air holding his “Chabot for Congress” sign in one hand while waiving at passing motorists with the other.

As the light changed, Chabot hurried down the sidewalk to catch the new stream of oncoming cars. “You’ve got to time the light,” he said, as a man in a Raiders jacket pulled up and shouted, “You’ve got my vote.”

To be fair, some motorists also gave Chabot a thumbs-down sign or shook their head at him. But others pulled into the CVS Pharmacy parking lot near his section of sidewalk to shake his hand and thank him for things he’s done.

“You don’t know me, but you’ve helped me in so many ways,” Debbie Shell said nervously, as she held her hand out to Chabot.

Chabot’s challenger, Democrat John Cranley, has accused Chabot of changing his ways and forsaking his roots because of the time he’s spent in Washington.

Chabot’s response: “The heck with all those negative ads, this is me out here.”

A faded blue 1993 Buick?

He makes $165,000 per year. Come on..is this really his wife's car?

Steve, support the economy by buying her a new car. How about a new 2007 Buick Lucerne CXS V-8, loaded? Same car as a Caddy DTS, but at a 26% cost savings. Great reviews. And both cars come from the same GM assembly plant in Michigan.

Buy American. Dump Steve

Double-talking Steve "heck with all the negative ads"...

ON THE FALSE ADS ATTACKING JOHN CRANLEY:

With no record of accomplishment or plan for a better future to campaign on, Stay-the-Course Steve Chabot and his Washington special-interest bosses are spending millions of dollars to falsely attack John Cranley. They have been falsely accusing Mr. Cranley on crime, immigration, spending, taxes and seem desperate enough to say anything at this point.

Below are excerpts from articles debunking ads running against Cranley:

“Republican mudslinging on an industrial scale” (Annenberg Public Policy Center - FactCheck.Org, 10/27/06)

“Factcheck.org has called out Chabot’s ads as ‘deceptive’”
(The Cincinnati Enquirer, 10/25/06)

“The very definition of political mudslinging” (Annenberg Public Policy Center - FactCheck.Org, 10/27/06)

“Many of the ‘headlines’ presented in the ad never ran in any local newspaper.” (The Cincinnati Enquirer, 10/23/06)

“Misleading”(Annenberg Public Policy Center -- FactCheck.Org, 10/11/06)

“This is the ad the National Republican Congressional Campaign Committee didn’t want fact-checked.” (The Cincinnati Enquirer, 10/28/06)

“Nobody’s proposing paying benefits to illegals” (Annenberg Public Policy Center - FactCheck.Org, 10/11/06)

“NRCC spokesman refused to release the ad’s supporting documentation, and would not discuss the claims made on it.” (The Cincinnati Enquirer, 10/28/06)

“This ad provides no documentation for its claims” (The Cincinnati Enquirer, 10/25/06)

“Vote cited in the GOP ad had nothing to do with taxes or spending” (The Cincinnati Enquirer, 10/08/06)

“Cranley was endorsed by the FOP for City Council twice after he supposedly ‘turned his back’ on them” (The Cincinnati Enquirer, 10/11/06)

“Outrageous assertions”(The Boston Globe, 10/28/06)

“None of that money went to ‘riot sympathizers’” (The Cincinnati Enquirer, 10/11/06)

“The charge is a
mischaracterization”(Annenberg Public Policy Center - FactCheck.Org, 10/11/06)

“The police-reform agreements, passed unanimously by City Council in 2002, were supported by politicians across the political spectrum, including two Republican councilmen (Pat DeWine and Chris Monzel) and former U.S. Attorney General John Ashcroft. The Fraternal Order of Police was also a signatory to the agreement, and the national president was present at the signing ceremony.”(The Cincinnati Enquirer, 10/11/06)

“Smearing the personal character” (The Boston Globe, 10/28/06)

Stevie, I spent all morning and afternoon campaigning for you. It's over. I've never seen so much anger and disgust directed towards one person before. I felt like the XU mascot walking up to a dorm at UC.

And this was in Green Township.

You are toast.

Chabot's the real deal and Cranley knows it. That's why he's spent all his money trying to tear a good man down. Voters will see through Cranley's smear campaign on election day.

Well, it sounded a little pathetic at first. Then it sounded humble. And my heart ache for him, wanting to keep his job, ready to face the public onthe streets.

I did stop and talk to him. I thanked him for saving my father's life whenthe VA hosptial refused to run additional tests to determine why he was dying. Chabot's office contacted the VA late on a Frid ay while the family gathered to say good bye. The VA very begrudedly did the MRI I had been insisting on. They found he had 11 brain abcesses that were the actual cause of his rapid deteriorzation - not the diverticulitus the hosptial couldn't get a grasp on. Dad lived, went through rehab at Drake for several weeks, returned to his home, where he lived for several months. My father died due to an unrelated medical incident after having months more with his children.
I thanked Chabot for that.

And I told him, still, I was on the fence with him. For a moment - my heart went outto him. I believe Chabot is a good man.
I asked him to please, ifhe gets another term, stop, please stand up for our values, our national integrity, for the people he was waving to. He suggested that I pray on the matter of who to vote for - him or Cranley.

I made down to the bottom Colerain hill and skipped up the entrance ramp to buy Kentucky priced cigarettes - by then, I had figured it out.

This isn't about my soft heart or gratitude. I didn't really need to pray, GOd gave me a brain so I could think it through.

I couldn't vote for the man who saved my Dad's life. There are too many other lives at stake. Chabot IS a good man. But he lost his way, not morally, but politically. He represents ( and I think he believes)the Republican ideology that has failed this district and this nation. Too many votes, too much harm. Too much rationalizing for Chabot and the rest of the Republicans, who, like Chabot, really are good men, with good intentions - who have been bamboozled by their own leadership.
Cranley is a good man, with good intentions, and most important - with a firm ideology that will furhter this nation and district. He and others who don't take this democracy for granted - will work hard to defend Her and defend us.
Chabot needs to come home again and redefine the Republican Party to reflect the values that are lying just below the surface.
GOod Luck Chabot, but come on home -

To anon of 11:04pm last night.

For Pete's sake...if you won't even vote for "the man who saved your Dad's life," then just what kind of a person are you, anyway?

Personally, I wouldn't even want your vote.

This is a difficult concept for conservatives to grasp, but some people vote for what’s best for the country and not just for what’s best for themselves. Chabot is part of the Republican gang that has repeatedly shafted veterans. Consider:
“The Republican majority of the House Budget Committee is reducing President Bush's proposed budget by about $844 million in health care and an additional $463 million in benefit programs including disability compensation, vocational rehabilitation, education survivor's benefits, and pension programs from next year's budget. In addition to these cuts, the GOP is planning to cut $15 billion from the veteran programs over the next 10 years. The soldiers and sailors that are currently in harms way in the the Middle East, are about to have their future veterans' benefits and health care slashed. If, that is, the Republicans get their way.”

Well, I am a person who cares more about the future of our nation for our children and grandchildren than I do about the past - it was a really hard decision.

John Cranley heroicly saved me from being raped by 3 large men. He fought them off with all his strength. He took care of me afterwards. He stayed with me at the hospital. Cranley has kept in touch with me over the years and we've developed a close personal friendship.

But I've realized I can't vote for the man who saved me from certain rape. I'm voting for Steve Chabot. He's one of us. He gets the job done for SW Ohio. John Cranley is great at fighting off rapists but hasn't been able to fight effectively for our city. Steve Chabot is the better man at representing our values in Washington.

To Anon 9:03pm

So you refuse to vote for the man who "saved your Dad's life."

I guess that says a lot about how important "constituent services" are in the day-to-day life of a Congressman.

So listen up, JC...this info is for you:

1) Do NOT waste any of your valuable time as a Congressman on "constituent services." You can see by the above that the average voter is not the least bit grateful.

2) Spend your time where it really matters: on your committee and subcommittee assignments. Stay in DC and be "someone who matters" in national affairs. That's why you were elected: to represent your constituents in DC, as a whole, and not get bogged down in answering individual complaints of a highly specific nature.

To any wonks/average SW Ohio voter who reads this stuff...

You're really taking this way too seriously. When my dad died in April of '05, my thought was "Well, there goes another Republican voter. Too bad for them."

(Because despite the fact that everything he had was the result of the Democrats, FDR and the prosperity brought by those policies, post-World War II........he still went to his grave hating "FDR and his buck-toothed wife, Eleanor," as he used to put it. He simply blamed anything and everything on FDR, Robert Byrd, and Clinton.)

And he went to his grave lovin' Fox News and lovin' George Bush.

Go figure.

But anyway (if anybody is still reading this), loosen up, live a little. Go out and cruise the streets of Cincinnati in your faded '93 Buicks...turn on the radio and listen to some oldies.

Here's a feel-good list for Steve, in case he's out on the road today:

The Shoop-Shoop Song (aka "It's in his Kiss,") by Betty Everett

- "It's Not Unusual," by Tom Jones
- "She's a Lady," also Tom Jones

-"Girl, You'll be a Woman Soon,"
by Urge Overkill (featured in the movie, Pulp Fiction)

-"Lay Down" - by Melanie

-"I'm Too Sexy" - by Right Said Fred

A Rolling Stones Trio:
"Mannish Boy"
"When the Whip Comes Down"
"Beast of Burden"

"Loser" by Beck

Hey..Advocate for satan..

The correct title of Melanie's song is "Candle in the Rain."
