Best place to vote? The winner is ...

Perhaps there is no better place in the city to vote than at one of the four precincts within Mt. Airy United Methodist Church. Why? Three words: Chocolate chip cookies. The church's hospitality team doesn't skimp on the hospitality, offering water and apples - and, in the afternoon, cookies - as well as directions to voters who've wandered into the wrong precinct. The church began offering the service during the 2004 elections, said greeter Steve Depoe, anticipating long lines and possible glitches.

The members of the church helping are very nice but those actually working the polls are slow, rude and, at my precinct, couldn't read my ID or hear what I was telling her.

I think there should be some minimum requirements for people to be certified competent to work at a polling place-

1)You should have good enough vision to be able to read small type without asking three other workers, "Can you tell what this says?"

2) You should be able to hear.

3) You should have sufficient fine motor skill to separate individual sheets of paper.

4) You should know the damn voter ID rules.

5) You should keep your mouth shut about anything REMOTELY political. E.G., saying things like, "My niece's girlfriend is a democrat and she has had five abortions!"

6) At least one person should always be at hte site who has a modicum of understanding as to how the scanner works.

7) You should act as your role dictates---you should be there to assist your fellow citizens in excercing their constitutional right. You are not the Voting Gestapo standing at a chekpoint in the snow reviewing someone's credentials and deciding whether or not they can cross the border.
