Wanted: GOP's anti-Cranley 'Taser' ad

A still photo of the National Republican Congressional Committee's "Taser" ad.

When they know that they're about to release an over-hyped stinker of a movie -- say, Snakes on a Plane -- movie studios will refuse to screen it to movie critics. If they can get it to opening weekend before the critics get ahold of it, they surmise, they can often recover their investment before word gets out and the movie tanks at the box office.

That's what the National Republican Congressional Committee is doing with its latest horror flick, which features a 7-year-old girl getting zapped, Frankenstein-style, with electricity.

"TASERS! 7-YEAR-OLDS! 50,000 VOLTS!" the ad's graphics exclaim.

The ad is referring to a non-binding resolution last year, sponsored by Charterite Councilman Christopher Smitherman, what would have asked the Cincinnati Police Department to change its policy on the use of the stun guns on children under 11. Democratic Councilman John Cranley, who is opposing Republican Steve Chabot in the 1st District congressional race, voted against the resolution and in support of the police policy.

That's remarkable because most of the attacks on Cranley have been that he's "turned his back" on police. And it puts national Republicans on the same side as Smitherman -- a councilman one prominent Republican officeholder famously called "a smart-mouthed little punk" -- and against the Cincinnati Police.

The ad also alleges that Cranley took money from campaign contributors with business before City Council, but the supporting fine print flies by so quickly it's difficult to know what the GOP's talking about.

The NRCC is the only campaign running ads in Cincinnati -- local or national -- that has refused to release its ads to the Enquirer. (Sometimes, campaigns will even make their opponent's ads available so they can be fact-checked.) NRCC spokesman Ed Patsu cited "policy."

If you have a digital copy of the ad for an upcoming "Ad Watch" feature, please e-mail gkorte@enquirer.com.

UPDATE (Thursday, 9:37 a.m.): The Cranley campaign has graciously provided a copy of the ad. Look for a fact check in the Enquirer in the coming days.

I saw it last night. Chabot's gone too far this time. Way, way too far. The cute little white girl in pig-tails, the lightning bolts, the sound effects - my living room erupted in laughter, then puzzled over the cognitive-dissonance-meter-exploding "I thought they were saying Cranley is SOFT on crime" factor.

Generally I think Chabot has run a good campaign and Cranley has run a crap campaign, but this one is just absurd. It has to boomerang.

No truth in reporting here. Mike Allen is a disgraced former officeholder and Smitherman's witch hunt had everything to do with Elder.

I saw this ad last night. Very weird.

Not sure what the NRCC is thinking with this one. And you're right, it's definitely not on message with Chabot's "Cranley is weak on crime" theme.

There is something fishy going on with the NRCC. Any person familar with Cincy politics must have had a belly laugh when they saw it.

They must be doing commercials without much knowledge of background or context. It takes alot of time to write, produce and film a commercial, and this one was DEFINATELY specific for Chabot. How could they blow it so bad?? Panic, all-hands-on-deck, crank em out..... we're in trouble.

Also, check out the race baiting Harold Ford ad a non-campaign committee on behalf of Corker ran in Tenessee, it's on YouTube.

I must have missed the race-baiting element in the Ford ad, unless it's race baiting to imply he met a white floozy somewhere.

Regarding Chabot, his biggest problem is his campaign manager. I've posted his resume of nothing but losses before, but the Spinquirer is covering for him and they censored my post. No need to mention his name... everyone reading this knows who he is and how much damage he's done to the Republican Party.

Really weird on the part of Chabot.

Which is it? Cranley does not support the police? Or he supports them so much that he lets the cop on the street make the "tasing" call.

Doubt that this ad will be around long.

Apparently, you idiots have no idea how independent expenditures work. That ad was paid for by the NRCC in an independent expenditure. As a result, no one involved with Steve Chabot's campaign can have any communication related to or input on the ad.

I can understand how Cranley-ites would fail to grasp this concept, since it is quite apparent that Cranley has been working in tandem with both the DCCC and AFSCME on all their ads. That, my mentally incompetent friends is actually a violation of the law.

Besides, what really upsets Cranley about that ad is that it mentions his corrupt practice of accepting quid pro quo contributions. That is a felony if it occurs at the federal level. Just ask Bob Ney -- the person in Congress that Cranley most resembles both in stature and in ethics.
