Bob Ney won't run for re-election

Enquirer Washington Bureau reporter Malia Rulon reports:

WASHINGTON – Embattled Rep. Bob Ney, who has been under scrutiny for accepting a free trip and meals from convicted former lobbyist Jack Abramoff, announced Monday morning that he would not seek re-election to Ohio’s 18th District.

“Ultimately this decision came down to my family. I must think of them first, and I can no longer put them through this ordeal,” Ney said in the statement.

Ney, a Republican from Heath, has not been charged with any wrongdoing and has insisted throughout the Abramoff investigation that he did nothing illegal or improper.

Still, Ney ended up in the spotlight when Abramoff and Ney’s former chief of staff, Neil Volz, admitted earlier this year in plea deals that they attempted to bribe Ney with a free golfing trip to Scotland, tickets to sporting events, campaign contributions and free meals at the up-scale restaurant that Abramoff owned in exchange for official favors.

In recent months, several members of Ney’s congressional staff, including Will Heaton, the chief of staff who replaced Volz, have been subpoenaed. Heaton and former press secretary Brian Walsh resigned from Ney’s office in June.

Under Ohio law, if Ney voluntary withdraws from the race after the primary election but before the general election, the Ohio Republican Party can nominate a candidate to replace him.

Ohio state Sen. Joy Padgett, R-Coshocton, told the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review that she had been asked by House Majority Leader John Boehner, R-West Chester, to run.

It wasn’t immediately clear why state Sen. Jay Hottinger, R-Newark, another lawmaker who had said he would potentially be interested in succeeding Ney, hadn’t been asked to run. Boehner’s office didn’t immediately respond to questions.

Ney declined an interview request Monday. He said in his statement that he still plans to serve out the remainder of his term, which ends at the end of the year.

The Democrat running for the seat this fall is Zack Space, the law director of Dover. Space had outraised Ney by $190,000 during the last three months.

Space couldn’t be immediately reached for comment.

More good news for John Cranley. Dems will put this seat in the "win" column and the money that was going to Space and for anti-Ney ads can now go to pro-Cranley and anti-Chabot purposes.

My prediction (Cranley over Combover 60-40) is looking better every day. I might even increase the margin.

why is this a prominent stroy in every other ohio newspaper ( and some in other states) but it is left to the blog in cincinnati? why was there no story in the enq about petro stepping in inthe battle regarding the health alliance ( especially after petro refused to step in on the drake trasnfer), why is there no article about the failed audits of betty montgomery over the last 4 years regarding the potential /"questionable $1B that is under scrutiny in hamilton couty ( though it's in other papers), why is there no article regarding mike allen's disbursement from his campaign war chest to settle his sexual harassment claims ( and no charges filed by deters or the cincinnati bar against allen), why has the enq not reported onthe portune plan for the jail tax, why dosen't the levy articles include comments from the agencies that wil have to cut services,

why is the cincinnati enq permitted to campaign through their news reporting without giving equal time to dems

why is the enq stil in business

geez

Rep Ney's resignation is most definitely good news for Cranley.

It is a shame, though, that Bob Ney got caught up in this. As I understand it, he is the only member of Congress to speak Farsi -- the national language of Iran -- because it certainly seems the US could have used someone with at least some kind of relevant background in the Middle and Near East. (Apparently Ney used to teach English in Iran.)

I also agree with anon 1:15pm:

The print edition of the Enquirer must still be figuring out how to play this story so it does the least amount of damage to Chabot.

Are you being Ney say-ers ??

The wRong wingnut fishwrap will not print until enough elephant dung is spread and the replacement found.

Then the fishwrap will start slinging the, so called, new elephant dung claiming fertile ground !!

The problem is:

No matter where they BUY the replacement it will still smell like schmidt !!

HAD ENOUGH, VOTE DEMOCRATIC 2006

The good news is that not only can the DCCC focus more positive energy on John Cranley, but that Zachary Space already has a huge fundraising advantage over whoever is his Republican challenger. I hope that the majority of Ohio's congressional delegation goes blue this year.

Chabot took money from Neil Volz (guilty of congressional bribing schemes)

and from David Safavian (guilty of congressional bribing schemes)

and Jack Abramoff (guilty of congressional bribing schemes) raised Chabot money.

and Mike Scanlon (guilty of congressional bribing schemes) raised Chabot money

and Tony Rudy (guilty of congressional bribing schemes) raised Chabot money.

Maybe Chabot should keep that term limit promise he made and resign before he is forced to do so by his guilty buddies.

Good riddance to the corrupt Ney and his hideous toupee. Ohio's other follicly challenged congressman needs to go next.
