Behind closed doors...

Rep. John Boehner of West Chester was elected House majority leader by fellow House Republicans exactly one week ago on a secret ballot behind closed doors.

Check out these photos from the House Republican Conference blog that show what it was like in the room where the vote took place - the room where reporters were not allowed inside!

Whoever was allowed in to take the photos needs to learn about flash photography. I can only imagine that Ms. Rulon felt this was worthy of posting solely because of her pique at being excluded from the meeting

There is no barb or agenda behind this question. I'm truly wondering why you deem it significant that a vote on who will act as the leader of House Republicans was done in private with secret balloting? Could you please explain why you deem that so noteworthy? It seems to me that party caucuses, because they don't consider legislation or appropriate money, aren't gatherings that I would expect to be public.

Thanks!

Mark, please relay the last part of your statement about caucuses to the people at the Enquirer who are out to get Mark Mallory. They claim to be about good government, but in reality, they just can't stomach the fact that their boy lost.

I thought that the flap over Mallory's meetings with City Council members and the state law they apparently violate was dumb. (The law should be repealed!) Such meetings are eseential for the functioning of the political process. Private meetings are not intrinsically corrupt. Sometimes being out of the glare of the media allows people to actually compromise and get things done. If corruption is the result of such meetings, it will become apparent. So, I'm not critical of Mallory at all for those private meetings!
