Chabot gittin' to Gitmo

Rep. Steve Chabot, R-Westwood, is traveling next week to Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, to examine first-hand the conditions of facilities and treatment of about 500 suspected terrorists being held and interrogated at the U.S. naval base there.

Chabot is chairman of the House subcommittee on the Constitution, which is currently investigating the treatment of enemy combatants with regard to the U.S. Constitution and international practices. Media reports have claimed some people have been illegally detained and abused.

He also will travel to Colombia to meet with U.S. and local officials about the illegal drug trade. Chabot and Rep. Jerrold Nadler of New York, the top Democrat on the Constitution subcommittee, depart Monday.

globe trot trot trot.

seriously, this "might" be a legit trip. but looking at the other recent blog link with Chabot trips to Japan and Taiwan makes you wonder if Chabot's just become a tourist.

That's all fine and good, but what does it do for the First District? You only see Chabot in the District between June and November every even year. It's sad how out of touch with the First District Steve Chabot's become.

The election year trips will have to look super official. These will be ones to try and hide the other ones. If Steve Chabot can take enough trips that might sound good to the district he flys away from, the voters might forget.

Forget about all the Heritage Foundation junket.

Forget about Taiwan and Japan.

Forget about Lahore, Pakistan and Kotli Nunan, Pakistan.

Forget about Islamibad, Pakistan. and Muzzafarrabad, Pakistan.

Forget about Bombay, India and Ahmedabad, India.

Forget about New Delhi, India.

And forget about the returns to Taiwan.

Forget about New York, NY courtesy of the Humpty Dumpty Institute.

Will us Elephants in district one forget?

Torture and indefinite stays are ok, Bush said so.
We will continue to spray poison on the people of Colombia and all of their crops. The war on drugs is a failure because it's really a war on the poor.

Wow...the two congressmen investigating Gitmo go on a bipartisan trip and big surprise the liberals rip Chabot for you (this is especially surprising from Erich-wait not it isn't)...

Just shows how desperate you guys are.

I can't tell you much about Congressman Nadler, which is why I didn't comment on his participation on this trip. What I can tell you, however, is that Steve Chabot has been ignoring this District for more than a decade. He is a shamefully worthless Representative, and the only time he bothers to show up in the District is when he's up for re-election. He seems more than happy, however, to go on trips with the Heritage Foundation, and cast votes to benefit lobbyists like Jack Abramoff, and not his own constituents. Chabot must go.

You democrats are going to look real silly wasting all this time going after Steve Chabot when he proves that he keeps his word.

Chris Monzel will be the man to pick up on all the great things Chabot has done when Steve steps down to honor his term limit promise.

You're out of your mind. Chabot's going to break his six term promise, just like he broke his three term promise. If there's one thing he does well, it's lie.

at 9:41 AM, January 15, 2006 Anonymous Anonymous said...

Plus, Monzel would be any candidate's dream opponent. He loses every other race he runs, and given that less than impressive 7th place finish, he's do for an a huge defeat. Bring it on! Monzel for Congress...please!

Chabot not found in the district? You must be blind. I've been around more than one congressman, he is the one that is in his district the most...why? His family is here. Unlike most congressmen he doesn't transplant them or bring them along with him to DC. He has to come back.

Chabot feels he's served his time. He doesn't want to publicly deal with all the things DeLay and Bush have had him do. They will look far worse than they actually are, so he will keep his term limit promise. Besides, Monzel has earned his turn. Chris and Steve are a lot a like. Cranley has no chance against Monzel.

There's a difference between physically being in the District and paying attention to the needs of your constituents. I live about two blocks from Chabot's house, so I would be a liar if I said I never see him taking out the garbage or walking his dog. However, the only time Chabot does anything for his District is in the six months leading up to an election. He spends all the rest of his time catering to special interests that do not reflect the interests of the First District. Abramoff's clients, the Heritage Foundation, the NRA, and a host of others can be sure to have Chabot's ear. Chabot is bad for this District and part of the GOP culture of corruption. Now that Rob Portman's gone, you can rest assured that nobody in Washington, DC will address the needs of any part of southwest Ohio. Portman, for all his faults and catering to the Bush administration, at least understood the needs of a regional economy. Any pork the First District got in the last ten years was courtesy of Rob Portman going to bat for southwest Ohio. Chabot is willing to throw out the baby with the bathwater. There is a difference between principle and neglect, and Chabot has neglected this District.

Erich....come back to talk with me some time... and having been a life-long resident of the first district, I have not always voted for Chabot (in fact most of the times he ran I did not), but out of touch with the constituents?!? I'm afraid that the Democratic party has, and continues to, drifted farther to the left of not only the first district, but every district.

Erich,

Has Cranley already worked out his talking points for you? You are doing a good job of spewing them out...

You are going to run into a lot of constituents that are going to disagree strongly with these comments, his constituent-work is top-notch.

How has Chabot served the special interests of Abramoff, the Heritage Foundation, or the NRA? What bills has he introduced? Will Cranley pledge to take no money from special interests? Will he take no money from unions?

I don't know why I am wasting my time, you are turning out to be quite a political lackey-it is sad.

Erich has nailed it. Listen up dude.

Not only has Chabot "drifted" away from his district, him and his "republican revolutionaries" have abandoned their promises to clean up corruption.

Anon. 1/15/2006 8:23 PM: I haven't seen, received instructions from, or spoken to John Cranley since he announced his bid for Congress. Ask anyone who knows me, and they will tell you I've never been a fan of Steve Chabot. On a personal note, I can tell you that his constituent-work is not at all "top-notch." My family has been trying to get medals earned by but never awarded to my grandfather during World War Two for Chabot's entire tenure in Congress, but his office has dropped the ball more times than we care to remember.

As for your questions, Chabot has served Abramoff by signing a letter of support for his clients (for which his campaign was handsomely rewarded (http://frontier.cincinnati.com/blogs/gov/2006/01/chabot-to-donate-abramoff-related.asp). He must have served the NRA in some capacity, because as of December 2003, they gave him an "A" rating (http://www.issues2000.org/OH/Steve_Chabot.htm#Gun_Control). And his voting record overall more or less mirrors the Heritage Foundation...must be why he keeps getting invited on all their trips.

Mr. Waggoner: I hate how people keep blaming the Democratic Party for drifting left, but never call the Republicans on their radical right-wing policies. Health care is a value...yet Chabot opposes any real health care reform. Being able to feed your family and keep a roof over their heads is a value...yet Chabot opposes increasing the minimum wage. Safety is a value...yet Chabot sleeps and caters to the gun lobby while 79 Cincinnatians were murdered in 2005. Infrastructure is a value, but when's the last time you saw Steve Chabot go to bat for federal money in this District? I don't think Chabot's values reflect the District, or the country at all. I may take your invitation to stop by Walnut, though. I haven't been by in a couple years. If Grunder or Yosh are reading the blogs too, please join in the conversation.

Erich,

RE: Serving special interests.

If NARAL or the AFL-CIO gives a politician an A rating, is he or she serving those special interests? It is a yes or no question-no need to look at your talking points for the answer.

Shocked has the GOP talking points down...whenever someone points out Republican corruption, blame the working men and women who built this country and are exploited by REPUBLICAN businessmen.

"Hey, Stevie boy. Your buddy here. Yeah. That's right a new job to do. Let's just get to the point. Some of them people think we can't torture the tearerists. I need you to say everything is fine and American. In the meantime, take a nice little vacation. That's right. You know what I say, -- vacation makes it all go away".

Erich, I have done some work with veterans trying to get their benefits established or restored. This includes medals. I sure would love to help you get his medals. Can you post a copy of your grandfather's service records?

Let's get this straight...Cranley goes to Memphis to check out the local bar scene and give tax dollars to a hack consultant who makes racist remarks about Chinese Americans. Now Cranley’s front men are attacking Chabot for going to Columbia (neither safe nor desirable) and Gitmo to support our troops. Typical Cranley, talking out of both sides of his mouth.
