As if they don't have other issues to fight about...

Tuesday night's mayoral debate at Alchemize, an Over-the-Rhine bar, started 10 minutes later than its scheduled 8 p.m. start because candidates Mark Mallory and David Pepper were too busy debating the length of their opening statements.

Pepper wanted five minutes (which is what organizers had planned); Mallory wanted two minutes. The topic has been a sticking point since the Sept. 13 primary, and the two candidates huddled with advisers at length before the debate to negotiate the terms.

The controversy ended when Brian Griffin, a debate organizer, told the candidates: "The longer you go on, the less time you'll have to debate."

Opening statements ended up at three minutes, though Mallory used only two-and-a-half.

Pepper figures the more time he wastes on an opening statement, the fewer questions he'll have to answer. We've already heard the stump speeches. Kudos to Mallory for not wanting to waste time on patting himself on the back, and for wanting to actually get to the real issues.

While it does seem a little silly to be arguing these things (I was also one of the organizers) it is important to remember that these candidates have faced the public directly more than any politicians that I can recall. Ours was one of 14 deabtes. I don't think anyone can say that they haven't been forthcoming with their positions.....and that is the important thing.

Pepper is the only candidate who's backed out of a televised debate because he has to "knock on doors".

More great in depth coverage from No Reporte Korte "the Jayson Blair of Cincinnati". That was very informative Jayson, you've out done yourself again.

Smoke eater,

Next to David Pepper you are easily the most boring person on the planet. While I respect what you do I request that you stop smoking and writing at the same time.

Just based on the photo you can hear Pepper stutter and choke. His tie is too tight and he looks ready to explode. Face it Peter he is a loser and so are you.

Given all that you list that David does for the community...is is asshamed that it is all a sham!
