Monzel to citizens: Go see the Reds

What is this? A Cincinnati Reds promotional item? A Chris Monzel campaign piece?

Neither. Or maybe both. But you paid for it with your tax dollars. Monzel's chief of staff, Bradford P. Beckett, explains:
We produced the Reds schedule from City Hall. It was paid for out of our administrative budget. We paid $702.51 for 12,000 of them. Their purpose was 3-fold: economic development tool to bring more people downtown to spend money in restaurants etc.; constituent service vehicle by asking people to call us with problems, etc.; and it was a way to help the Reds' attendance levels by encouraging people to go to the games -- which keeps people employed and generates tax dollars (similar to the first reason).

This is a clear campaign violation. It should be reported immediately to the board of elections. No matter how they try to spin it, we know what the purpose of this is....it's unethical.

At least he is trying to get people to come downtown, which is more than most on Council. To me it seems you are trying to make a big deal of nothing.

It's a complete campaign violation: city seal on privately owned baseball team schedule; no election disclaimer; paid for by public budget. He should have to pay for the violation, and double because it's such a stupid mistake, but then again, his chief of staff is an idiot.

"At least he is trying to get people to come downtown"

Are you serious? Why do we have laws? Why do we have the board of elections? Should we just allow our city officials to spend money ANY way they want if it gets people to come downtown? This is a complete campaign violation and should be and IS being reported to the board of elections.

Trying to get people to come downtown as well as giving them information on who to call when there's a problem seems perfectly fine to me. I would much rather a Councilmember spend their money on printing something than enormous cell phone bills and expensive furniture for their office. It's time to stop making mountains out of molehills and realize that our officials need to do whatever they can to help us, even if it means putting their contact information on a Reds schedule so that we remember.

you people are just fiddling (talking about this stupid non-issue) while Rome/Cincinnati burns to the ground with lawlessness.

How many of you can even name your councilman and furthermore, how many of you actually voted in the last election? No-reporte korte is just up to his typical muck-raking.

Monzel printed that? There are dudes all hugging and touching in that picture. I’m surprised that didn’t bother him. I thought he’d have a picture of the Reds in church or picking daisies or doing something that protects all of the children and families.

When we are in a severe budget crisis in our city and our council members are spending taxpayer dollars on self promoting propaganda, then it is a big deal. Not to mention the fact that it is clearly illegal.

I have gone through much trouble to figure out how to file a complaint.

It is all documented here.

i dont think it is illegal though it seems a little suspect.

nothing on it encourages a vote for monzel so it will probably be found legal.

i guess it is fair to say "there ought to be a law" but until someone passes it we are all kind of screwed

As a rocket scientist, Chris Monzel knows more than you!

phffffft...

It may not be illegal in a beating up your child sort of way, but it is a clear campaign violation.
