Schmidt headed to Colombia

Rep. Jean Schmidt is headed to Colombia with her predecessor's successor.
Follow that?

Schmidt, a Miami Township Republican, will join Ambassador Susan Schwab, the U.S. trade representative, on the congressional delegation mission to Colombia.

Schmidt succeeded Terrace Park Republican Rob Portman in Congress when Portman became the U.S. trade representative in 2005. When Portman left USTR a year later to join the White House, Schwab replaced him at USTR.

The trip will focus on the importance of trade between the two countries and the U.S.-Colombia Free Trade Agreement, which is pending in Congress.

“Colombia plays a large part in our Cincinnati economy particularly for our Folger’s and Chiquita companies,” Schmidt said in a statement today. “Open, fair and free trade with Colombia helps some of Cincinnati’s most prominent companies, which means more jobs for hard working Ohioans.”

The delegation will be in Colombia from today until Sunday. They plan to meet with Colombian President Alvaro Uribe, local business and labor leaders, as well as supporters and opponents of the free trade agreement.

Colombia is the largest South American export market for U.S. agriculture products and the United States’ fourth largest Latin America trading partner, according to Schmidt's office. Passage of this trade deal would eliminate duties on U.S. products entering the Colombian market.

Typical wRong wingnut whacko spewing the elephant dung propaganda at our friends of the Gay Rights Community!

Miss door matt sure can make one hurl false accusations at our Gay Friends!

Totally clue-less why she does this!

If the, 'culture of corruption', wiretaps were legal then there would be no need for HIV drugs?

Leave it to the foot-tapping, flip-flopper's to try and defend the indefensible HIV victims!

No one prevented boners or conspired to cover them for protection, it was intercepted by Schmidt and completely misunderstood !

Schmidt can't get any traffic to her own blog so she trolls our Gay Friends, PERIOD !

PATHETIC 'HypocRite' !

HAD ENOUGH, VOTE DEMOCRAT 2008 and support Gay Rights !

While your away perhaps you should look for a new job, home, and suckers that will listen to your failed logic and flawed diplomacy. I do hope you come back though as I will look forward to seeing that look of a deer caught in headlights as you are defeated in November.

Do you know who wouldn't be in Columbia? Jim Parker. He would be in Pike County working with the people to fix HEALTHCARE and working on JOBS so that people can realize their AMERICAN DREAMS.

That is what he would be doing. Not taking vacations.

It is troubling, but not surprising to know that Representative Schidt supports the Plan Colombia under which the United States government give billions of dollars in weapons to the Colombian goverment which they in turn use on their own people in the name of the war on drugs.

Here we go again, there will be a net loss of jobs in Ohio and the U.S. if this goes through as well as more Columbian product coming into our country duty free and NONE, NO,ZERO U.S. product going there.

But wrinkle face Jeans rich friends will get richer at our expense.

We will however have one increase.
UNEMPLOYMENT!!

It never stops from the liberals, gays, Obama supporters...Jean Schmidt cannot even change her hair style and they come out of the woodwork. Jean you are doing and how done a good job. Wulsin has no experience, is a rich doctor who has a dried up practice and is bored. It started with Schmidt's comment to Murtha, she was proven right. The liberals tried for 3 weeks to show us that Jean did not finish a marathon she ran in the time she said she did. They were wrong again. Such a pathetic bunch of losers. Vote for Wulsin and Obama...then bitch about your taxes unless none of you work and are expecting the government to take care of you. Anon 6:51...how does your face look? Have you taken a look at Wulsin's face? Is that how you judge a person, you moron.

The comments on this blog are ridiculous. I bet if Schmidt cured cancer she would get ridiculed for not solving the AIDS pandemic at the same time. Grow up and say something civilized that adds to the conversation. I give the other blog editors and writers at the Enquirer credit for cleaning up ridiculous comments. i.e. John Fay’s and Bill Koch’s blog.

Jim Parker is a Democrat who supports middle class tax cuts. As a matter of fact he was the only Democrat who promised to never raise your taxes. He wanted to expand the Medicare system from age 65 down to age 50 but wanted businesses to have the option of purchasing their health insurance cheaper from Medicare than they can from any of the health insurance companies in America. He wanted to take the profit out of healthcare insurance and drug company bottom lines and create a healthier more prosperous nation.

Jim Parker was trying to lower the cost of healthcare, expand primary care access to millions of people who are not covered now and strengthen the bottom lines of small and family owned businesses that fuel the economic growth and creation of jobs all throughout this country. One of the number one reasons so many jobs are sent overseas is because of the cost of healthcare. Jim Parker had ideas that would have strengthened the American economy, fueled economic growth and AMERICAN job development, cut middle class taxes, lowered the cost of healthcare, expanded the Medicare system to more than half of the baby boom generation, saved social security for the people who need it the most, stopped the flow of illegal immigrants into the country, created programs that assured primary care access for the poorest children in America, lowered the price of gasoline and diesel fuel all throughout the country and brought alternative energy development to the forefront of the American economic agenda.

If he ever runs for Congress and wins, I am certain that if he is successful with half of what he tries to accomplish, America will experience the longest period of economic growth since this nation began. He would be instrumental in protecting and strengthening American incomes, helping American familes to lead healthy prosperous lives, and helping millions of people to realize that idea that he so often refers to when he talks with thousands of families all throughout Southern Ohio - The AMERICAN DREAM...

I doubt that he would ever take a taxpayer funded junket to a South American country that literally fuels the drug problem that we face in this country.

Just imagine if a Catholic Democrat who knows healthcare and will not raise your taxes ever wins the Democratic primary in the most conservative congressional district in Ohio. The 2nd district Republican Congresswoman would be in serious jeopardy of losing her seat in the US House of Representatives.

If Parker ever wins a primary, then we will have a Congressman who makes us ALL proud. But for now, we'll just have to wait and see what happens. Best of luck to the best candidate this time...

I heard that the next time Jim Parker runs for Congress that he is going to visit the homes of thirty thousand people in all seven counties that make up his Congressional district. Democrats like him, Republican like him and Independents think his ideas are the answer to their problems.

I was looking at Parker's website.

Sure, more "free trade." And Chiquita might be here, but it isn't my company. Didn't they recently get in trouble by hiring right-wing terrorist militias to kill labor leaders in Colombia? yes, yes they did.

How many labor leaders has Schmidt talked to in her own district, I wonder?

I am just thankful Jean doesn't represent Colerain Township. The last thing we'd want to is her ugly mug running around trying to get on TV in the middle of the tragedy we are experiencing with the loss of 2 of our firefighters.

The impact that a Colombian Free Trade Agreement will have on anti-american feelings in South America thanks to Mr. Chavez will be huge. All of you who are bashing Schmidt for doing this clearly don't know a thing about foreign policy. The economic impact of her trip should be the last thing she should be touting. This country needs to start focusing on how to have a positive long term relationship with South America despite Huggy Chavez and his band of brothers down there. Uribe has been mis-represented substantially, and it's unfortunate that so many critics of Schmidt are too ignorant to understand the benefits this could have for everyone. I'm not a huge fan of Congresswoman Schmidt, but this could potentially be an enormous leap forward for both countries.

Anon 6:56,

The US has been heavily involved in Colombia and other parts of South America funding and training right-wing terrorists. How many people have "disappeared" over the decades by people the US has supported, trained, and armed? It isn't Chavez who has created anti-US feelings in South America. It was Pinochet and people like him. It is the thugs that Chiquita hired to kill workers trying to organize. Free trade won't help with those pains.

Anon 3:25,

Your posting is totally inappropirate. I am a retired firefighter, and I find it very disrepectful for you to bring the tragic end in the line of duty of two of my comrades into this, or any, of these blogs for a political cheap shot. Several people made a complete mockery of the Maupin blog by injecting their political venom into what should have been a thoughful memorial, but it was at least germaine to the issue at hand. There was no reference at all here until you made one. Please, if you have any respect for these fallen figherfighters, their families, freinds, and firefighter brothers and sisters, desist from dishonoring their memories by making them the subject of this political theatre, at least until their bodies have been buried and their familes have mourned. I can tell you first hand there are no politics on the fire truck when the alarm rings, and we are all united in our greif for their untimely loss. We will never forget their sacrifice, and will honor their memory and their service.

Godspeed, Captain Broxterman and Firefighter Schira. You have answered the alarm well, now be at peace.

"anti-American feelings in South America thanks to Mr. Chavez will be huge. 6:56 PM, April 05, 2008"

Typical wRong wingnut whacko spewing the elephant dung propaganda !

Obviously clue-less about Chavez !

What other oil nation has offered heating oil aid to the poor in America ?

The wRong wingnut whacko attempt to demonize Chavez because he has nationalized the oil fields, thus, returning the national resources to nation. The 'culture of corruption' corporate cronies can't stand the fact that they can't extort oil profits, PERIOD !

Therefore, the wRong wingnut whackos will invoke intervention to cease power via. coup or direct invasion, i.e. Iraq style with lies and fear mongering in an effort to destabilize Venezuela and exploit their natural resources !

If there is world-wide anti-American sentiment then it is a direct result of the current wRong wingnut whacko foreign policies, PERIOD !

Let's see: the wRong wingnut whackos can jump in bed with commies for cheap labor in China, while they continue to violate the human rights of Tibetans, yet, demonize Chavez whom refuses to let the nations resource revenue from being exploited, WTF !

PATHETIC 'family values' !

Jean,

You and your supporters seem a bit threatened by a person who lives 100 miles away, has raised no money amd isn't even running for office.

And as for anonymous 10:00 am, do your parents know you're spewing your hatred on the web? Probably not because they are probably at work like Jim Parker.

Oh look. Jim Parker is speaking about himself in third person again. How do you spell Jim Parker's middle name again?

Oh yeah.

Jim Parker isn't posting on this blog. Jim Parker is knocking on doors in Scioto County saying THANK YOU to the voters...something that Jean Schmidt never did.

I don't know how many people in Brown County care about Colombia but I do know a lot of people in Brown County who care about HEALTHCARE, JOBS, and THE AMERICAN DREAM.

Jean Schmidt should take a lesson from Jim Parker, whether Jim Parker ever runs again for Congress or not. He knows how to treat the residents of the county and what issues are important to them. Jean Schmidt sits in her MILLION DOLLAR HOUSE when she should be talking to the families of our SOLDIERS.
