Schmidt takes off for Iraq
Two months after bringing the House to a grinding halt during a debate over the Iraq war, Rep. Jean Schmidt, R-Miami Township, is herself on the way to Iraq.
Schmidt departs Jan. 8 and returns Jan. 18.
While in Iraq, her exact whereabouts and iternary are secret — for security reasons — but her office said she plans to meet with U.S. soldiers — hopefully some from Ohio — and talk to U.S. officials about the progress of the war.
Schmidt drew national attention for comments she made on the House floor about the Iraq war on Nov. 18. Lawmakers were debating a resolution to immediately withdraw troops from Iraq when Schmidt told Rep. John Murtha, D-Pa., a decorated former Marine, that "cowards cut and run, Marines never do."
She was booed off the House floor and forced to apologize.
A few days later, she was invited to travel to Iraq with other lawmakers as part of an official trip
organized by the House Agriculture Committee.
Schmidt plans to call the Enquirer while she's in Iraq, so stay tuned for what she has to say ...

This is a political stunt by a desperate politician.
While I wish her no harm while she is there, I certainly hope the voters see thru her shallow hipocrisy.
When she retires at the end of 2006, she will have some photos and memories of her junket.
What a crock of "Schmidt" !
Is she going to have to pay for those phone calls from Iraq like our soldiers have to? Or is she planning on screwing the taxpayers for the sake of her own little PR campaign?
Wow, I can't wait to hear what she has to report. I wonder if she'll say that the we're making great progress and democracy is just around the corner and that the troops are great and support Bush 100% and don't want to cut and run like cowards and it's too bad the liberal media never reports the good news.
Maybe she'll come back with a better perspective on what's going on over there.
My name is Jim Parker and I've been running for Congress against Jean Schmidt since September 2005. That was before she ever embarrassed herself in front of millions of Americans by attacking Jack Murtha on the floor of the House of Representatives.
These are serious times in the United States of America. We have serious problems in our country and they require serious people with serious solutions.
I've spent my entire career in healthcare. When you work in hospitals, with nurses, with doctors, with multi-million dollar budgets, and with people's lives, you learn very quickly to listen to the experts. You learn to work with people to solve problems. You put your differences aside to focus on what is important in other people's lives.
Jean Schmidt should have listened to John Murtha. He is an expert in military affairs. She is obviously not...
It has been an honor to be the first candidate for Congress to take up the fight for the betterment of the lives of 630,000 people who live in Southern Ohio these past several months. It will be even more of an honor to be your next Congressman. But that, depite the incredible effort that I have been demonstrating, is not up to me... It's entirely up to you.
Thank you. May God protect the lives of every American soldier and keep them free from harm.

Get off her back.
Murtha is not the Marines.
And what is wrong with what she said? If she said the same to, say, a green party member it would have been okay?
I would have like to have seen all of those courageous reps that booed her when it actually occurred. I can almost guarantee that it wasn't spontaneous outburst, but a case of follow the mob. This is the same courgeous mob that cut and run when they gave Bush the go ahead to attack a small nation and murder their innocent people.
I spoke with a Republican woman today who lives in a rural township in the Second District of Ohio. Her husband is a Democrat and I asked him to vote for me in the primary on May 2nd. While we were talking, she had several concerns and made several legitimate points about the way that things are done in Washington DC. I spent more time listening to that one Republican woman than I spent talking with any other constituent all day long.
The reality in Washington (to me) is very simple. There are two types of politicians in Washington. Those who want to solve America's problems and those who want to divide America for their own political gain. The politicians in Washington have successfully divided us on moral and family values. They have divided us on taxes and the economy. And now they are dividing us on the war. We need more people in our government who are interested in solving America's problems than the ones who only care about themselves.
The only type of person who can truly solve the problems of America is someone who is willing to bypass political partisanship and bring people together to make America better. That is exactly what we do in healthcare every single day. We don't know any other way to get things done. That is the kind of person that I am... and that is the type of Congressman that I will always be. You see, I'm not doing this for me. I'm doing it for you. ALL of you...
Believe it or not, my candidacy has absolutely nothing to do with Jean Schmidt. I met Jean Schmidt and Bob McEwen and the rest of the politicians of Southern Ohio last year when I ran for Congress. I didn't enter the race last year because of Jean Schmidt and my candidacy has nothing to do with her right now.
I ran for Congress to make our country better. I did it because I know that I can be the type of Congressman who can bring Democrats and Republicans together to solve America's problems. I did it because people like Alan Greenspan stand in places like Philadelphia and say that the current economy doesn't have the capacity to support the promises that have been made to the baby boom generation. That's Medicare, Medicaid and Social Security folks. That's half the American budget. Those are programs that fuel one of the leading sectors of economic growth and opportunity in our country. They help provide millions of jobs to people who need them. And they are a lifeline to millions of Americans in their time of need. Those programs are not perfect, but it is an absolute economic necessity that they exist.
I did it because I see people who own small businesses and families who live all over Southern Ohio struggle with the cost of health insurance. I did it because of the greed of oil and insurance companies that are stealing the American Dream from millions of American families. I did it because 8 million children in our country have no health care coverage. I did it because there is so much corruption and greed in our government that it's a shame for my children to see it on the news. We don't even like for the news to be on when they are in the room anymore. I did it because we are at war without a specific reason or a specific plan. I did it because I know that I can be a better Congressman than anyone I see in Washington these days; Republican or Democrat.
My family lives in Pike County. Most of the people in this Congressional District live more than 75 - 100 miles from our home. Sometimes I tell people that if they don't believe that a man who lives in a small rural community in Southern Ohio can be their next Congressman, then they haven't met Ted Strickland. He is from Lisbon, a community in Scioto County that most of you have probably never heard of before... He was a great Congressman and he'll soon become one of the best governors that Ohio has ever known. Anything is possible in America if we do what we do for the right reasons.
When I drive to Scioto, Adams, Brown, Clermont, Warren and Hamilton Couties, I meet lots of decent people who care about their families just like my wife and I care about ours... I believe that a United States Congressman has a responsibility to serve every person who lives in his District; not just the privileged few who can afford to contribute to their political campaign funds. It seems as though the politicians in Washington have forgotten about your families. They have removed themselves from the problems that you discuss at your dinner table every night. They focus on ten second sound bytes, billboards, campaign contributions and they forget about your American Dream. It's difficult for me to understand how an organization as important as the United States Congress can be so negligent. I guess it's because I come from healthcare and we hold ourselves to the highest standard - 24 hours a day - 7 days a week.
Whe we wake up tomorrow, there will only be 113 days left until election day (May 2, 2006). I can only meet some of the people from Southern Ohio. You see, I work for a living and have a family to support. But I'd meet every one of you if I could. All of you, regardless of your political beliefs, are worth every ounce of energy that I have given to this campaign. To those of you I have had the chance to meet, thanks for listening and sharing your ideas, concerns and opinions with me. Everybody's opinions are worth something. Some of you have excellent ideas. Thank you.
The next 113 days will be the continuation of an incredible journey that bgan last September and will go until May 2nd. A journey that has taken me from Waverly to Cincinnati and back, and back, and back again... Thank you for the greatest experience of a lifetime. I hope that I get to be the one who gets to make your country better. Thank you.

I'm betting if a suicide bomber or grenade came her way there, she'd "cut and run". Of course maybe we should use Mean Jean the Witch as a potent weapon to win the war. Just tell the Iraqis she has a twin sister and we can also scrounge up some other Repug womenfolk that are just as scary.
Hopefully Mean Jean won't refer to any of those Marines as cowards like she does over here, and that she won't lie about any of their statements upon her return.
