Schmidt chief of staff gave $100 to McEwen

Turns out Rep. Jean Schmidt's chief of staff, Barry Bennett, gave $100 to Schmidt rival Bob McEwen during last year's primary for the 2nd District special election.

Schmidt beat McEwen 31 percent to 25 percent.

Bennett's wife, Melissa Bennett, who is President Bush's scheduler at the White House, used to work for McEwen when he was a member of Congress.

"I've known Bob for 20 years. It's not like we're strangers," Bennett told the Enquirer, adding that it's the last contribution he'll be making to McEwen - ever.

McEwen is challenging Schmidt again for the 2nd District in the GOP primary May 2.

When asked, McEwen's campaign spokesman, Michael Harlow, put out this statement about the contribution:

It is true that Barry Bennett contributed to Bob McEwen’s campaign the last time.

Bob and Liz (McEwen) have a genuine friendship with Barry's wife, who formerly worked for Bob on Capitol Hill and then in Rob Portman's office.

I am sure that the viciously mean things that Barry has been saying lately are an outgrowth of his new position working for Jean Schmidt.

We have all experienced how mean the Schmidt campaigns are. Bob McEwen was urged by Republicans across the district to restore a voice in Washington, like Rob Portman’s was, of which we can be proud.

We have heard the boasting of how mean they intend to be. I must respond to her daily abuses and I will seek to do so in as gracious a manner as possible.

However, Bob McEwen is a gentleman who is admired across the nation for his commitment to the issues we care about. That is why he was asked to speak in 17 states on behalf of Republican campaigns in 2004, and it is why he his colleagues elected him to represent Ohio on the two most respected committee assignments in the Congress: the powerful Rules Committee and the Select Committee on Intelligence.

The mean and embarrassing attacks, which are the only accomplishment of our current representative in Washington, must be endured until the fluke election of last year can be corrected at the ballot box.

Mike Harlow needs to clean the bogus endorsements off of the McEwen web site. And that letter from the attorney general has nothing to the with the House Ethics Commission that got poor old "Bouncing Bob" to admit to bouncing the checks. I don't think Congresswoman Schmidt has anything to do with all of the ethics charges against McEwen. He brought them on himself. Mike, if your lucky enough to get a pay check you better cash it quick. You still remember what a pay check looks like don't you.

I am glad the Schmidt supporters are going to make this race about mud-slinging and personal attacks on the campaign staff. It shows they've already figured out that they can't win on the issues or on her voting record. Schmidt's only hope is to try to bring the McEwen people down to their own mudslinging level.

If Mean Jean's supporters wish to make this race about ethics issues, they'll have to explain why, like Governor Taft, Mean Jean took gifts from lobbyists and failed to report it on her campaign finance report. Mean Jean is just as unethical as Bob Taft, her favorite criminal Governor.

I have not seen a single attack by Schmidt against McEwen. In fact I think it was Malia that said that the McEwen campaign was broke. Schmidt never attacked McEwen during the last primary. I think Brinkman and Dewine found all the dirt on McEwen. From what they found there is a big pile of dirt. All of the ethics charges against McEwen are being filed by others, not Schmidt. I think McEwen has his press person, the Whistleblower, doing the attacks against Schmidt and she has not attacked back. The voters will decide this election and they have voted McEwen out in three different elections. Now he will be a four time loser.

Jean Schmidt is running a very interesting campaign. Instead of trying to assassinate the character of another candidate her people are concentrating their effort on the opponent's staff. Classy, Jean. Show this district how Republicans should stick together.

To Anon 6:45- Here is one example straight from the Enquirer and the Enquirer blog. Here is Barry Bennett, the taxpayer-funded Chief of Staff to Jean Schmidt and her designated attack dog: "Bob McEwen announcing his candidacy at a hospital is fitting. His campaign is already in critical condition."
Nowhere have I seen anything about the Schmidt cmapaign welcoming a challenge and discussion of the issues. They do not project any sort of confidence.

She has hired a king of retorts as her campaign manager and spokesman. Furthermore, he can't get his retorts right: the McEwen announcement was at a health and fitness center, not in a hospital.

The Mcewen campaign shouldnt act as if they are above reproach. I have heard these guys tear this lady up and down.

Their m.o. is to say one thing in the press and do another when the cameras are not rolling.

Fortunatly for Jean people see through that type of disingenuous behavior.

Just a reminder, I have challenged both Jean Schmidt and Bob McEwen to a debate. Actually, I've challenged Jean Schmidt twice. I was hoping to discuss the Economy, Healthcare and the War on Iraq with Jean Schmidt and Bob McEwen in front of the people who live in Hamilton County. Looks like they don't want to do that...

The deadline for response from either candidate was January 31st. (That's today... AND... No Response...) Is Tom Brinkman planning to run for Congress? Maybe he will want to talk about the Economy, Healthcare and the War in Iraq... Isn't that what a Congressman is supposed to do?

Memo to Mean Jean:

Have Barry start packing your bags, Big Bob's coming to do the job you cannot seem to do.

I have never seen public a public servant like Barry Bennett being torn up so much by other CONSERVATIVES! Wow, you McEwen folks must have a lot of time on your hands.

What has Jean Schmidt not done that you all are pissed off about? She votes to pass budget cuts, votes to protect property rights, votes to protect life... what has Bob done? Well, he's been a registered lobbyist LIVING IN VIRGINIA!

Jim,

May want to consult a map of the district. By alienating the other counties represented in the second congressional district, you've lost a lot of votes.

I was stunned to read in The Enquirer that our daughte Melissa Bennett has a "genuine friendship"with Bob McEwen. Where Michael Harlow got that idea is a mystery! Melissa did work for Mr.McEwen about 15 years ago and has seen him perhaps once during the time he has been working in Washington as a lobbyist. As a family we had a difficult time understanding how a United States Congressperson,Mr. MeEwen, could be so unethical as to write checks to the House Bank when he knew he didn't have any money in his account. We are proud of our daughter and our son-in-law, Barry.

Barry - put the crack pipe down and take a deep breath.

I don't need a map of the Second District... I've been in nearly every community in Southern Ohio during the last year of my life. I love Southern Ohio and the people who live here are some of the best people that anyone will ever meet. We live in the best Congressional District that was ever gerrymandered...

I don't care about votes. I care about people. That's one of the main differences between me and whoever you will have to choose from in the fall.
