Cincinnati Politics primer: What is the Black Fist?

The Black Fist's Kabaka Oba protests police outside the Seasongood Pavilion in Mount Adams in August 2003. (Photo by Brandi Stafford/The Cincinnati Enquirer)

(WARNING: This post contains strong language.)

If you've been to a Cincinnati City Council meeting, listened to talk radio, or stumbled across a Fountain Square rally in the last four years, you've no doubt heard of the Black Fist.

If you haven't, you're probably wondering how this small group of African-American activists managed to become a defining issue in Tuesday's mayoral debate in the West End.

David Pepper clearly came into the debate looking for an excuse to bring up the Black Fist, using a question about how he would work with Hamilton County Republicans to discuss Mark L. Mallory's acceptance of the group's endorsement. The Pepper campaign also distributed a statement during the debate calling the group "extremist" and "divisive," pointing to the following statements as evidence:
  • The Black Fist participated in a December, 2002 Fountain Square protest of a menorah which included a sign reading, "Jews killed Jesus, had black slaves, stole our black identities." They also shouted chants of "Die Jews die."

  • At a an April, 2002 demonstration at the police memorial, the Black Fist protested police brutality, the Catholic Church, and Pete Rose. Protesters called counter-demonstrators ''white devils,'' ''snow monkeys'' and ''faggots."

  • A July, 2005 post on the Black Fist's blog accuses police of being aligned with the Ku Klux Klan in a conspiracy to kill African-Americans. "They love sucking the sweat of black people. That's why the Cincinnati police in Ohio love to rape little girls and put fear into black women!!!"
The Black Fist is led by Kabaka Oba, a 47-year-old Metro bus driver from the West End who ran unsuccessfully for the Democratic nomination for Hamilton County Commissioner in 2004. He calls himself a "general," and says the Black Fist is not an organization, but a "movement." The Black fist -- formerly known as the Black Special Forces -- is loosely associated with a number of other pro-boycott groups, such as Amanda Mayes' Coalition for a Just Cincinnati, Nate Livingston Jr.'s Unite Cincinnati PAC, and William Kirkland's African-American Cultural Commission.

Oba, who attended Tuesday night's debate, seemed not at all uncomfortable being thrust into the center of the mayoral campaign.

"What we like about Mark Mallory is that he is not afraid to talk to us about what our positions are," Oba said. "We can't find any middle ground with David Pepper, because he supports the police even when the police are wrong." He said Mallory doesn't agree with everything the Black Fist stands for, but that "consensus-building doesn't depend on total agreement."

Oba denied that the organization was anti-Semitic, saying that black people were the chosen people of God. "Pepper hates black people. He's anti-Semitic."

As for the 2002 protest of the Fountain Square menorah, Oba said it was an attempt to show that the federal court decision allowing the menorah also paved the way for the Ku Klux Klan to put a cross on the square. He said the chants were directed at Rabbi Sholom Kalmanson. "We showed him some anti-Semitic things so he could feel what we feel when we see the KKK cross," Oba said.

Lincoln Ware, the WDBZ talk show host who gave Oba an almost-daily forum for his views for four years before Oba was banned from the radio station last month, said the Black Fist was a small group unworthy of much debate in the mayoral campaign.

"I can't believe they're giving the Black Fist this much credit. There's like four people in the Black Fist, if that many," he said. "They don't have a whole lot of followers. They think they do. They're on the fringes."

UPDATE (Thursday, 10:09 p.m.): A previous version of this entry incorrectly listed Oba's address as Deer Park. He lives in the West End.

what that man does is absolutely horrible and if he were white or jewish he would be treated better but he really gets by with more because he is black and he is the real racist, anti-christ.

Oba is a black supremist and is making statements just like the terrorist, anit jew, anti christian, anti white, anti women. If he is so very unhappy tell him to move to another country or better yet to another universe.

I have seen this fool perform 'live' at City Council meetings and it is not a pretty sight. He is an ignorant racist, nothing more/nothing less - a fine example of the most putrid filth in the human gene pool. I can't understand why there is no public outrage over this scumbag's behavior. Mark Mallory should be thoroughly ashamed to have his name spoken in the same sentence with this foul individual and organization.

You all have your reasons, to me Oba symbolizes the real opinions and feeling some blacks feel but may not be able to stand up for themselves. I give him absolute all praise for standing up in the light of prejudice and racism and backs him 100%. Either love him or hate him. The realty is the black community won't back down and will fight to the end. Black Power!!! Preach ON General.. ONE Love and Peace and Power

Well I would post my name but the damn thing doesn't let me, but here ya go.

My name is Timothy Woods. Now you know I'm not afraid to back what i say here.

The man is an idiot, he brought the shooting on himself. why? Not because he spoke out, hell thats why America is great you can speak out for your self or your faith or color, no he brought it on himself because while he was trying to make his own people proud he fell into the age old trap, he put other people down, you see to make yourself or your faith/color/ whatever look good you must not put other down, otherwise you look like an bigot.

The man got shot, he will probably die. There will probably be another riot, all because some loud mouthed racist bus driver was unable to use the brains he was given to form a coherent thought.
I too have heard this man speak, he has some good points at times, at other times. Well at other times he frankly shows his ignorance.
I feel for his family, but once again, this was not something that was unexpected.
If you want to praise your faith/color/whatever, then do so in a way that raises up all other, not just yourself, then and only then will you be heard, there is no stronger community then the human race, to bad we all forget that once you strip off our skin, we are la the same color and indistinguishable from one another.

I am embarrased for all the good and decent peole of Cincinnati. Nothing good will ever happen for the race relations in this (or any other city) until we can all treat one another as GOD's children. No GOD, NO PEACE.

This is what happens when you let the animals run free without the cages. Cincinnati needs more cages, and less loud mouths complaining of police brutality against black Americans. Every black American gunned down by Cincinnati Police had a record a mile long. Gun or no gun, if they didn't get it that day, they would have got it another day becuase of putting themselves in that situation.

As a Black-American citizen in Amberley Village, one who is educated and looks at all the trash I have to walk past from the parking lot I use, to the building I work (Atrium 2), I am disgusted that citizens like Oba and his black fist, as well as other idiots with their baggy clothes, white tee-shirts, etc., claim to speak for me, the black citizen. I did my part in life, I stayed out of trouble, no record, a BS from UC and a MS from The Ohio State University. I should be the one that speaks for the black-Americans, one who strived to succeed and bring my family wealth and happiness, not the filth that walk through the streets of downtown and OTR that are gang-banging, looking for trouble, looking to take someone out to earn respect of another stupid ganagbangin' brother.

Cincinnati has gone to hell. Another riot will make you look bad, not me.

What did anyone like him ever do to help anyone? His heart may somehow be in a somewhat right place, but his mouth and actions are not. MLK JR would roll over in his grave if he saw the digression that black Americans have made in this country. How about everyone that complains about how they are mistreated by society wake up and learn that you have to work to gain status in this country, no matter what color you are. If you dont want to be treated like trash, dont act like it, dress like it, and be as uneducated as it. Dont blame everyone else for something you can help. How about not having 5 kids out of wedlock? Why not stay in school? Why not call the cops when you see people doing illegal things? Oba isnt doing anything except helping the races COME TOGETHER. Stop making rediculous excuses for not living up to your own abilities. No one is holding anyone down except for the people themselves. There is a specific reason that society in general has any type of negative view on black Americans, and it isntracism, its characterism. How about everyone who wants to live life through handouts and victimization take ahold of thier own lives... For your children, your selves, your friends, and for those in your race who work their asses off to live good decent lives, and who are sometimes the subject of racism because you are too ignorant to do anything for yourself.

He is a disgrace to the human race. He is just as evil as any other supremist group. Good riddens!!!!

some people love people and use things, others use people and love things. once we realize, we're all the same color, it will be too late. our blood is red, and we all bleed. we want the same things, happiness/peace/comfort/love/safety... we think we need to understand, but to understand requires a reason. acceptance is true and doens't need a reason. our perceptions are skewed, visions lost, hearts starving, and people in need of a common purpose and focus. individual events get publicity, sometimes negative, but mistakes bring about change. individuals make up the whole, what version of yourself are you using to perform change? who are you? what are you doing? was color the issue? or something else? there are things bigger than us, the 'above' and the 'below', and it appears the 'below' is able to distract a common purpose and vision meant for something yet again. it's time to make a change, it's time to accept and move on and have a common bond. Purpose, acceptance, growth, or fail by being the hate you hate. Not just Cincinnati, but the world needs to change! YOU and I both, need to change, together. I hope i see that in our lifetime.

Ah, but what does a man like the good General REALLY do to pay for his Hatorade©
and Ace of Race deck of cards? He drives a city bus. No, really! Remind this white oppressor not to go anywhere near that bus. But I digress-back to the main event:

"General Kabaka Oba, is an outspoken sometimes radical and an overpowering presence of a man. His words fall different on the different segments of the Cincinnati society; but one thing is certain the General is a very smart intellectual person."

Not to make fun of their obvious grammar, spelling and puntuation errors. That is entirely too easy. Nor is it fair to make fun of thuglifearmy.com’s whitewash of an obvious race-baiting, windy crackpot. I merely want to ask the administrators of thuglifearmy.com one small question: can I be a “very smart intellectual person” too? Pretty please?

"Because we may disagree, does not give the right to try to kill someone. We need to learn to agree to disagree – for our future."

I agree with the very smart intellectual words of thuglifearmy.com. After all, if the black youth of Cincinnati were to listen to the messages of “General Transit”, then we might have people getting gunned down in their cars like, er, Tupac.

I remember Cincinnati a bustling dowtown. Even with Japanese tourists with cameras hanging off their necks. Downtown was crowded with people enjoying the places to shop and felt safe. Well that is all gone because of low lifes. Life is too short to waste trying to make things worthwhile. For the young there is hope but as you get older it is better to move on to a better place and enjoy life not believe things will be changed in one part of a life time. I am middle aged and lived through alot. I don't want to take a chance I won't be robbed, beaten, assaulted by ignorant people just to prove I believe in something. People suck and excuses don't make people better. When you are in an area and feel safe it is a start. If you don't feel safe move on.

When the majority of the black population quit using the race card for everything that is when you will see considerable improvements in race relations.

John Q. Public in the USA is sick and tired of hearing it. We hear black people talk about family....hell these young kids don't even know who their father is. Black women having 3, 4, 5 kids by different men.

You make a family, stay together, go to school, learn to read and write, pull your pants up, speak English, get a job nad pay taxes and be productive, quit taking welfare and handouts....and most important, be sure to pass these traits on to the next generation.

Men like the dumb ass that got shot, Jesse Jackson, Al Sharpton, Charles Barron, Charlie Rangel, and Farrakan......everytime these men open their mouth they set the black people back 10 years.
Why is it that blacks are roughly 10-12% of the population in this country yet they commit 80% of the violent crimes??

Geez, will they ever get it ?

Anon 4:07, the majority of the black population is this city & others will NEVER stop dealing with the race card deck. They've found the easy way, rather than stand up, do something rewarding in & with their lives.

This entire event has spun clearly out of control. There's some no load on another blog who had the audacity to blame this on the white residents. I answered back & told him basically to get off his no-load tookus & get a f#$&ing job!

Unproven remarks such as the above & the idiot who fingerpointed at David Pepper as the one who gave the orders to shoot, coupled with the never-ending race card business is going to widen the divide in this City even more.

Actually, I cannot blame the honest folks in this City for separating themselves further. Such accusations & moronic statements add to the mistrust & negative perception.

My hearty applause & sincere admiration to the lady/gentleman from Amberley Village. Thank you for having the courage & dignity to step forward. You are a perfect role model by which others could seek sage counsel.

However, this incident was completely uncalled for. I am keeping Kabaka in my best & purest thoughts for recovery.

Right or wrong, black or white, rich or poor, no one deserves to be gunned down in the streets. For those of you who feel otherwise, I feel sorry for you. Your behavior and words are no better than those of the man you feel justified condemning. Shame on you! Really – shame on you!

Remember - Kabaka Oba has just as much right to express himself just as you have expressed yourself on this blog and in other situations that you are passionate about. What makes you different or better?! Surely, you do not see your words and opinions as having more authority.

I pray that God spares his life.

Well the last comment and request made on this blog did not get answered as you all know by now, Kabka Oba has died, and yes I do believe that he died for what he believed and for "speaking out". I have not always agreed with the methods that Kabka used in voicing his opinions, but "He defended to the death" his right to say it. We all don't deal with pain the same way, neither do we all see things the same way, our point of reference is different and whatever a person perceives or believes to be true, then it is. I believe that alot of things hurted Kabka's heart even to a point that only his bed pillow could be a witness, but the only way he would allow himself to express his pain was with anger and verbal assults at times, anger is an emotion that most people show because it's the one that we dont have to be vulnerable. Kabka believed as I do that we have police officers who dont see their job as a service to the community. I don't understand why it is so hard for some of us to believe that we have "bad" cops, cops are only people who have applied for a job and have passed the quailifications necessary to obtain that job, there is no way for the police department or the person giving an interview to be able to see "the real heart or chartacter" of a person, they can only go by what the person said and how they fair on test, etc. There are evil, prejudice people in our world, and yes they get hired as waitresses, bank tellers, shopping mall attendances and yes, even police officers, and until we can change this "binding arbitration" that keeps allowing bad cops to have their jobs back even when they admit to lying or planting evidence, and yes, even admitting to "beating a dead corpse" we will continue to have police brutality. It will be a wonderful day when the chief of police and any other organization, enforces a zero tolerance for obvious ill treatment toward people of a different color or culture, the culture of the police department needs to change, the way things have always been done needs to change. I am not talking about all police officers. If I was head of a major corporation, I would weed out my bad seeds, anyone who does not profit my company or those persons who could potenially cause harm for the organization as a whole would have to go, any good leader would do that. In closing, I believe that alot of people will miss Kabka, either He as a net flying around in your face, or an "S" in your smile (because he had such a good sense of humor)whatever He was to you, I believe you will miss that. I was bless to see a different side of Kabka, again I have not always agreed with him, in fact most ofen I disagreed with the "HOW of what he did, but I will never dissagree with the "WHAT". I pray for peace for his family and his sons. "Kabka rest in peace, we all wont have to worry anymore about the how or the what anymore, who will cry out now?

This is not really a color issue.
The problem is that all-regardless of color-Cincinnatians should fear what can happen if you get pulled over or want to be protected from a police department that is always right and has different policies than all surrounding police departments-- And unfortunately BRAG about their zero tolerance and no deals or plead deals- go to the suburbs to be safe and get FAIR treatment. Soon the city will look like a deserted slum because all the GOOD people WHO CAN [pray for those who cannot] move out and finally let's get smart and think about it can we even go downtown in the afternoon??

I hate to hear that another PERSON has lost their life, black or white. It saddens me that we don't find more pride in our own city to work TOGETHER to keep the peace. Life hands you a series of choices - WE make up our own minds - WE make our own choices. It's time to start living in 2006 - this is now. People need to learn how to take responsibility for their own actions and decisions. It is the number one problem in this city and the world for that matter. It's always easier to blame someone else then to take a good look at yourself and realize that you are the only one who made your mind up.

For the person that said we are all ignorant, it's clear your a racist. And when you say " You people" that also shows it. Crime comes in all races it's just more interesting when it's black on black crime. Just to let you know most seiral killers are white, and so are the Priest we trust with our kids,so are the kids that shoot up the schools and kill their entire families because mommy took the car keys, and dont forget the mothers who kill their kids cause the new boyfriend said he never wanted children... NOW THAT"S STUPID!

GOD IS NO RESPECTER OF PERSONS SO WHY SHOULD WE BE? HE WILL JUDGE THE GOOD AND THE BAD OF US ALL. THE PROBLEM IS THAT THERE ARE PEOPLE WHO DONT BELIEVE THAT THERE IS A GOD THAT SITS HIGH AND LOOKS LOW, AND WHO WILL EXECUTE HIS WRATH ON ALL EVIL IN DUE TIME. I PRAY THAT WHILE THE BLOOD IS STILL RUNNING WARM IN YOUR VEINS THAT YOU REPENT OF THE EVIL DEEDS YOUVE DONE, AND RECIEVE JESUS CHRIST AS SAVIOR AND LORD WHO IS THE ONLY WAY TO BE SAVED! IN CASE YOU DIDNT KNOW HE DIED FOR YOUR SINS SO YOU WONT HAVE NO EXCUSE TO DIE AND GO TO HELL. JESUS WAS COMPASSIONATE ON MANKIND OUT OF LOVE FOR HIS CREATION. THOSE OF US WHO HAVE EXCEPTED JESUS AS LORD AND SAVIOR MUST SHOW THE LOVE OF CHRIST TO THE LOST WORLD EVEN IN TIMES LIKE THESE. THERE IS A LOT I COULD SAY NEGATIVE ABOUT THE SHOOTING DEATH OF KABAKA OBA, BUT I KNOW THATS JUST WHAT SATIN WANTS AND I REALIZE THAT I DONT BELONG TO HIM, BUT I WILL SAY THIS... YOU HAVENT BEEN ROBBED BY THE GRACE OF GOD, AND IT HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH YOUR EDUCATION, AND WHERE YOU LIVE, IF EVIL WANTS TO FIND YOU IT WILL! YOU HAVE HAD A SO CALLED BETTER LIFE THAN A LOT OF OTHER PEOPLE THANKS BE TO GOD, BUT LETS NOT LOOK DOWN ON OTHERS AND SPECULATE WHY THEY DONT HAVE WHAT YOU HAVE. WHAT ABOUT PRAYING FOR OTHERS BECAUSE THE EDUCATION, MONEY ,JOBS, HOMES, AND ALL THAT GOES WITH IT CAN MEET YOU IN HELL! MY PRAYS GO OUT TO BOTH OF THE FAMILIES BECAUSE BOTH ARE SUFFERING A LOST. MAY GOD BE WITH THE BEREVED FAMILY OF KABAKA OBA, AND MAY GOD GIVE THE BEATTY FAMILY STRENGTH TO ENDURE WHAT THEIR LOVE ONE HAS TO ENDURE EMOTIONALLY, PHYSICALLY, VERBALLY, MENTALLY, AND MOST OF ALL SPIRITUALLY FOR THE EVIL HE HAS DONE. AT LAST I WILL SAY THAT IVE HAD TO ENDURE RACIAL PROFILING WITH THE CINCINNATI POLICE AND HAMILTON COUNTY SHERRIFS, BUT I KNOW WITH GOD FOR ME, THEN WHO CAN BE AGAINST ME? NOTHING CAN SEPERATE ME FROM THE LOVE OF CHRIST! TO GOD BE THE GLORY! HE WILL ULTIMANTLY GET THE LAST SAY IN EVER MATTER! SAID OUT OF LOVE, PEACE! MRS. SIMPSON

Kabaka died because he stalked harrassed and threatened Howard Beatty. Howard felt threatened. Kabaka and Joy Rolland went on public access TV and constantly threatened Howard and his family.
Damn, Why could Joy Rolland been with Kabaka that day at city hall?

Wow--it could not be more clear from some of these comments, why Cincinnati sucks--people here are so stupid, in every color! Stupid, but also very confrontational and self-righteous. I think the reason for that is that many people here never have lived (or even looked) outside of their little communities, so it's easy for each group to sit back and point fingers. We are left with nothing but a bunch of walking polarized stereotypes on both sides of the coin. Such a waste of time. When are people going to figure out that we all are living in paradise, it does not get any easier than it does here, and our short time here on Earth is meant for so much more than posturing and walking in the same traditional, thoughtless paths?

The comment posted by Anonymous at 3:28 PM, June 20, 2006 hits the nail on the head. I couldn't agree more. My husband and I, unfortunately, moved back here from FL six months ago to take care of some family stuff. I knew I would hate living here again, and it's worse than I thought. I can't wait to get out of here next year. I detest the stuffy self-important arrogance, the racism, the retarded passtimes and the bass-ackwardness of Cincinnati. So many people here seem to have some wild thing internally that's on the verge of snapping. This city scares me. I will never live here again.

When will our people ever wake up and smell the coffee..White folks be hoodwinking bamboozleing and tricking us for years with lies. Moreover whenever a black man opens his mouth an tells the truth he and us became racist? What is up with that? How can the decendants of slave holders call anyone a racist.
What you really need to consider is getting out of this beast belly

I read over and over again how the Police are racists with the sole purpose to harass and arrest African-Americans with absolute disgust. It doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure out that if you are standing on the corners day in and day out with your 24oz can of Beer in hand slinging dope or God knows what else, the Police or Deputies are probably going to engage you. And it doesn't matter where you're location is either. Even if you're in the suburbs expect the same treatment. White or Black. In Black neighborhoods you see people hanging on the corners all hours. O.T.R., Avondale, Evanston, Madisonville the list goes on and on. African-Americans need to look in the mirror and ask themselves one question. What can I do to improve myself and my community. I can guarantee I'd be calling the Police if thugs were hanging on the corner of my street at all hours. Bill Cosby as a Black public speaker has made more sense than any other I have listened to. And the uneducated African-American communities dislike his comments. I know why. Truth hurts. Quit using Racism as an out. Education, moral responsibility and pride in your community are the weapons to succeed in this country. Enough said.
